Default Sawgrass cart without chip, now printer does not work. Help!!

I just recently spent over a grand getting my first replacement set of Sublijet carts for my 4880 because the printer said "Ink Low" and with this model it won't tell you which one so boom I baught all 8.

I install the cart and my printer is not recognizing it. after a closer look I notice there is no little computer chip on the cart.

I call Sawgrass and they say, We will ship you out another one.

I get the new cart with the chip and the printer is now saying that the cartridge is not set properly. which is impossible on the 4880 since they just slide in. Plus I can still put the original cart in and it states that it is empty.

I call Saswgrass again and the apoligize and are sending me another cart.

I'm starting to think at this point that it is not the cart, but instead my printer has been damaged by installing the Sawgrass Cart without the chip.

Has anyone else had this problem or is there really a large amount of carts that are faulty.

This is my first time replacing carts on this machine because it is new.

You said you put your old ones in and it still said empty, so I would say it's not damaged. Never bought the carts, so don't know Sawgrass's failure rate on putting the chip in, or getting the chip in the right direction (most likely what happened on the second one).

I'm also surprised the 4880 doesn't tell you which ink cartridge is low, usually the Epson drivers report which cart is low as well as the printer itself via a flashing light when you go to remove the carts. I own the lower end models though, an R1800 and a C80.

Epson has the printer set up so if you are not using thier EPSON ink the printer will not tell you which bay is low. Sawgrass is working on overriding this feature like they did on the 4800 but as of now they have not fixed it with the 4880. One of the reps told me it wasn't very high on their priority. I guess this makes sence since you end up purchasing more ink this way.

I'd say it was a flaky chip, don't panic.

I got supplied some cartridges from a top name company, not Sawgrass. They had a problem with a whole batch of chips - I had some REALLY annoyed customers, out of production, we replaced flaky chip with flaky chip!

Hi Cory,

If you put a cartridge without a chip on it into any of the 4xxx series printers, you can very likely damage the printer. If you look into the slot on the printer that the cartridge goes into, there is an "arm" that sticks out with metal prongs on them. Those metal prongs are supposed to make the connection with the chip, and if you insert a cartridge without a chip, the prongs hook onto the cartridge in the hole where the chip should be, and damages the arm. The "arm" piece needs to be replaced before the printer will work.

I would put the original Epson cartridge into the printer, and if it does not read that chip, then I would say the printer is damaged.

I am back in business. I actually got a couple bad carts in a row. I was sure that I was being strung along by Sawgrass. I must say Sawgrass was very helpful and kept shipping me new carts NEXT DAY AIR until the problem was resolved. No chip reader damage just bad carts.

It happens, I assume that they get the chips from a garage in Shanghai. Some batches are better than others and because the ink is sealed you can't test them before sending them out.
My supplier has built a test rig to QC every chip, as you say it's very expensive to airmail these around & it's expensive to be out of production because of a duff chip.
Sawgrass get brownie points for their customer service though.
