Question Turn off or leave on all the time

So I just picked up a refurbished HM1 (my first garment printer) and I was reading in the docs that it says to always leave the printer on so when it is not in use it can periodically do a head cleaning to keep the head from getting clogged. Thats all well and good I'd hate to have to replace the head but where I'm just starting out I'm really only printing with it for about 4 hours a day so for 20 hours it's sitting there doing head cleanings however often it does them. My concern is that it seem like more ink is being used in head cleanings then I'm getting to put on shirts at this point. (Yeah I'm a little slow at printing as I'm still getting the hang of it and double checking stuff to make sure I'm not making mistakes.) Does everyone else leave their printer on all the time or after maintenance/cleaning do you turn it off until you use it the next day?

msnowman if you are using white ink or even have it installed I wouldn't be turning it off!

Believe you me if you turn it off you will do more head cleanings to start back up then it would do just sitting there. Just make sure you print every day. Even if you don't have an order always print something, and make sure you print with your white ink!!!

It makes good sense to leave them on, when you switch printers on they do a clean anyway so there isn't a great loss.

I have a Kiosk 2 and have had it for 8 months now. I do turn it off and every other day I turn it on and do a head cleaning if I don't use it. I only print a few times a week and haven't had any issues with clogging. Just need to do a little more to get the white ink going again.

Stephen, how much is a little more, if you leave it on it will only do a cleaning every 4 hours 6 per 24 hours if you have to do 10 to get it back to perfect you lose. Bleive me I have 2 koisks with white ink and it took me a while to learn that leaving them on is better than shutting them down. The white ink will clog on you if it sits for a couple days. If i'm not going to run the white I'll put flushing solution in my spare bottles and let that flush thru white while it sits. Just a little FYI I've had mine for over 2 years and anything that could go wrong has gone wrong. SWF East has been great support for me.

I usually run a band of just white on a scrap shirt a few time until it looks good enough to start running a white print job. I just figured that was the thing to do. I thought letting it sit for a few days on was wasting ink in all the bottles. Am I wrong? Let me know

Any time you do a head cleaning ink is used equally from all channels. On the Kiosk or K-2 you will use an average of about 1-1.5 ml of ink per head cleaning. A 3" wide strip of white that is about 12" tall will use somewhere in the area of 2-3 ml of white ink. So the decision is yours. The important thing about the head cleanings is that they keep the ink moving in the lines and dampers, even if just a bit, every 6 hours.

Hope this helps.

WOW!!!!! I guess leaving it on is best. The wife an I do this part-time and I don't print white much. Should I drain the white while it's not used and leave the color inks in and put the white back when I need it????? Not sure.... Can I print just color on light garments without the white ink in?

Stephen if you take the white ink out you should replace it with flushing solution, do not leave it is with nothing in those channels! Yes you can then print just light colored shirt or any thing without the white ink!

I agree with everyone else. I leave mine on 24/7. It sounds like it may cost a little in ink but saves a lot in aspirin.
Does your machine have the new WIMS system? It has a circulating pump rather than an agitator in the bottle. If not you may want to look at that upgrade. I used to worry about leaving my machine unattended over long weekends but I got better. I left it 4 days over the Thanksgiving weekend and when I got in on Monday I ran 3 head cleanings and then a nozzle check and it checked perfectly. I probably didn't need to do that many cleanings. So, I was out of the shop for 5 days over Christmas and decided to see how many cleanings I had to do when I got back. I did one right away and then a nozzle check. It needed another cleaning but that was it. Two head cleanings after 5 days off. I love my WIMS!

Brian

Edited to add: I also run a humidifier in the winter.
Also; you may find that you need to run head cleanings in the middle of long runs too.
