The Second Annual DTG BATTLE ROYALE (print off) is here!

The Second Annual DTG Battle Royale is Here!

It's time to crown a new DTG champion! Last year @Justin Walker from Fusion Logistics Group took home the championship belt with an amazing print from his Neoflex machine. This year the cash prize has been increased and the title is up for grabs. It's anyone's game!

http://www.dtgbattleroyale.com/images/logo.png

What:
A fun contest that let's DTG owners battle it out to see who can get the best results from their machine.

Who will be the DTG Battle Royale Champion?

Who:
You, the DTG operator is eligible to enter. No entries from manufacturers or their distributors will be accepted.

When:
The entry period is from now until August 15, 2012!

How:
All entrants will print the same images on the front and back of a similar t-shirt (BLACK, ringspun) and mail in their best entry in to be judged.

Interested? Fill out the entry form here: DTG BATTLE ROYALE Entry Form

Prizes:
Besides bragging rights for a year, the winner will also receive...
JUDGING:

Entries will be judged based on 5 factors:

First Impressions - is the print "display ready" without pretreat stains and heat press squares

Sharpness of detail in the print

Softness of hand on the print

Print accuracy - (registration, trapping, no banding, even ink distribution)

Washability - how does the print hold up after the initial wash?

FRONT PRINT:

The front design was picked as an image because it was originally done as a screen printed design for last year's t-shirt design contest, so I'll have something physically printed to compare it to.

BACK PRINT:

The back design is original artwork that we had commissioned from KA Grafix specifically for this contest to really push the DTG printers capabilities. It has subtle details, lots of colors, and a background that fades away into the t-shirt color. AND ROBOTS! :)

I will photograph the entries and post them to the forum so that they can be voted on anonymously by the T-ShirtForums community.

I'll take into account both my own findings from seeing the t-shirts first and and the votes from the community to declare the final winner.

Once you fill out the entry form you'll get a link to download the high resolution artwork files for printing.

Please note that the artwork is property of T-Shirt Forums and isn't meant for sharing or reselling.

DTG BATTLE ROYALE - Direct to Garment Printing Showdown

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1) WHICH BRAND T-SHIRT SHOULD I USE?

While I'd love for every entry to use the same exact t-shirt, unfortunately that's not possible for a few reasons (some printers are in areas that don't carry American Apparel, etc)

My recommendation would be to use a BLACK, American Apparel (style 2001) t-shirt. If for some reason you can't get American Apparel where you are or you choose to not use that brand, use the best looking black (preferrably ringsspun cotton) t-shirt that you can find. To be fair, it does need to be a brand that everyone has access to via the normal wholesale distributors.

2) WHAT COLOR T-SHIRT SHOULD I PRINT ON?

BLACK

3) WHAT SIZE T-SHIRT SHOULD I PRINT ON?

X-LARGE

4) WHAT SHOULD THE PRINT SIZE BE?

As large as your machine will print.

5) WHEN IS THE DEADLINE THAT YOU NEED THE T-SHIRTS BY?

The entries must be received by AUGUST 15, 2012. DEADLINE EXTENDED TO AUGUST 31, 2011.

Very cool! I wish I could enter this year to defend my title - a $2,000 cash prize is pretty tempting!!! Good luck to everyone who enters - this year we should see some pretty impressive prints, given all the improvements that have been made to some of the RIP software, color profiles, etc; across the board, this industry just keeps on getting better... :)

Just downloaded the artwork. Are we allowed to edit the artwork? The back image has some of its edges cropped off so instead of it fading off it is a solid edge. Bottom left hand corner is a good example.

What type of edits were you thinking of doing?

I don't think the back artwork needs any edits to be printed correctly. The front artwork would need to be edited to include your company name on bottom of the graphic.

Just to soften the edges that were cropped instead of it being solid. Nothing else of course. Its a great piece!

I think printing it as is might be the best way to go to get the most consistent results across all entries.

I could see if there was a color that needed to be changed on the front artwork to make it work on black, but I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to start making creative changes to the back artwork :)

No problem. Your totally correct. I'm a graphic artist myself so I'm a perfectionist. I just thought I asked.:)

Why did you choose a black shirt for this comp? You would be testing the printers abilities to a higher degree if it were on an Irish green or orange etc..

Black shirt printing is plug and play. That's why 99% of the shirts you see on here are black. Same goes for the stuff they print at shows.

You would think so, but just judging from the varied results last year's competition (and what you see at trade shows), that definitely wasn't the case :)

Any reason You are not allowing a contest for printing on white shirts?

wish i had some kind of camera besides this crummy phone - Just got my DTG in and this is the second print I've tried with machine - fade to shirt no problem - this pic ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting looks horrible but trust me the action figures look real and pop off page - this shirt has been washed and colors are extremely vibrant - can't wait to learn what i'm doing right and wrong so I can win this contest! : ) http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/85/photofih.jpg/ here is yet another i simply grabbed off internet and " plug and play " or should i say print! I didn't have my pre-treat mix right and so it printed dark but again this pic is horrible - I'm simply posting to show fade...http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/85/photofih.jpg/ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting.... both of these are printed with no black and cmyk making greys ..

Most DTG printers can handle printing on white t-shirts pretty well.

The real challenge for DTG printers is printing on black/darks :)

If a DTG printer can print on blacks well, it stands to reason that the same printer can print on whites equally as well (if not better). Unfortunately, the reverse is not true :) Hence, the contest.

Hi everyone!

I will be entering the contest this year. Wish me luck in getting first place! haha

I'm a little confused about the front image. Why is the background white? I thought we were printing it on a black shirt. That is going to use up a lot of white ink.... =(

Also, is there a fee to enter the contest?

Should it look like the attached picture once it's printed?
