Arrow Entry #13 - DTG Battle Royale - Photos and Rating

Each entry will be given 10 points each for the 5 different rating factors (for a total 50 points max):

First Impressions - is the print "display ready" without pretreat stains and heat press squares

Sharpness of Detail in the print

Softness of Hand on the print

Print accuracy - (registration, trapping, no banding, even ink distribution)

Washability - how does the print hold up after the initial wash?

This post covers the first 4 factors with photos. The wash tests will be done over the next few days.

FI: 9

SOD: 8

SOH: 8

PA: 8

Total Before Wash: 33

Some things I looked for specifically in each entry:
  • My initial reaction of pulling the t-shirt out of the box. Was I wowed or dissappointed right off the bat?
  • How well the white underbase was trapped on the front print? Are there any white ink highlights peeking through (there shouldn't be any)
  • Evidence of pretreatment? Could I tell right off where the pretreat "square" was? Most entries actually did pretty well at this
  • Ink coverage on the back print. Lots more solid color areas on the back. Were the colors smooth or splotchy looking?
  • Color fades in the gold belt design? How well were the color variations handled?
  • The tricky mini 5? One of the trickiest areas of the back design was the small version of the 5 design from the front image. How well did the entrant handle blending it into the back print's design?
  • How did the print feel overall? Could I tell where the t-shirt stopped and the ink of the design started? Did the print feel heavy or barely noticeable
  • Overall how the DTG front print compared to the screen printed front print (last 2 photos)

This one has my vote! It matches the colors of the comparison shirt the closest. I'm going to contact them about doing some work for me.

Great job Ace!!

I noticed this about the front design. I agree that this one got closer on the 5 year design than many others. Not sure if some chose to enhance or not. Don't get me wrong, the enhancement are good in my opinion, but I'm wondering in Rodney's eye, if this was a point off or a point on. The enhanced versions (more saturation) certainly point to the strengths of CMYK/DTG printing vs the original spot color.

This post is a bit disappointing and misleading.

You should also point out to people that you are actually the webmaster for Ace Transfer Company and that you aren't just some random customer that is looking to contact them about printing.

It doesn't give Ace Transfer Company a good reputation when their employees post on the forums pretending not to be associated with the company to post rave reviews of their entry. It's best to be transparent and open in online forums, otherwise the trust the community has in what member's write is undermined.

Since one of the colors was changed on the original print, it wasn't really a point consideration if the color was off compared to the screen printed version.

Ace did do a great job of matching the original print.

I didn't ask anybody to try to match the original print colors, but Ace went out of their way to try (I just wish their employees were more upfront about their posts here )

This wasn't a screen printing vs DTG contest, it was a DTG vs DTG contest

Photos after one wash:

Nothing special was done to the wash settings.

I just left the settings on whatever they were already on from the last load of normal laundry: regular cycle (slow/fast), cold water, Tide laundry detergent the t-shirts were not turned inside out. Dried in the dryer on normal (medium high) heat.

Photos after 3rd and final wash test:

On the 2nd wash I washed all the t-shirts in warm water and dried on normal (medium high) heat.

On the 3rd wash my wife turned the temperature dial back to cold and I dried it on normal (medium high) heat.

To be honest, most of the DTG printed t-shirts held up very well in the wash tests. There were a couple of exceptions, but overall I was actually surprised at how well the colors and brightness stayed throughout the 3 washes.
