Default Encoder to stepper motor controller US digital MD2S

Hi everyone

Found stepper Motor Driver MD2S-P on US digital web site. It is not only driver, it is able to read optical encoder pulses and drive stepper motor. As i can see, it is good candidate for DTG printer builds.
If this thing works, we have perfect replacement for Arduino or similar boards. More information on

Thinking about buying this driver.
First I have to see how much i have to pay for customs and tax because I'm from Bosnia. ALso, I have to find, is Epson encoder Agilent HEDS-974x (in my Epson pro 4000) supported by this driver. But, maybe someone who read this post have this driver and can made test.

This will not work with stock encoder from printer.
Most stepper motors have 200 steps/rev.
With microstepping you can have 400,800,1600, 3200, 6400 steps/rev.

Stock encoder from printer have 360/720/1440/2880 ticks/rev.

So you cannot simply drive stepper motor from stock encoder signal.
You need to convert encoder ticks to correct number of steps for stepper motor. You need some microcontroller for doing that math.

Hi John

Unfortunately, I think you're right. I read the instructions on the US digital. Anyway, I sent an email to the US Digital to see if there is a replaceable firmware for this driver or something like that. I'm waiting for an answer but after your post I think it's impossible.

Just buy some cheap stepper motor driver (on TB6600 for example) and microcotroller of your choice (AVR for example).
20-30USD and you`re ready to go.
