Hallo! I live in the middle of nowhere, in a place called Wendover. The town is 120 miles west from Salt Lake City (SLC), 120 miles East of Elko, Nevada (which also has a WalMart). The problem with living in the middle of nowhere is you have to do a little bit of everything to survive.

I have a Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems, however since I graduated in 2002, this got me little work. By circumstance I ended up in the middle of nowhere, and even though I've left a few times, I keep coming back! I work on electronics, computers, and of course make t-shirts, signage, and a few other odds and ends in addition to running a gift shop.

ASD/AMD Show, Day 2

Posted August 12th, 2008 at 08:05 PM by joeshaul
Feet are tired! Spent the entire day walking, except for lunch which I spent standing in line for about an hour, then ate for about 15 minutes only to walk more.

Today we ordered:
The cap platen for our Brother. My mom decided to take the damage for it (wasn’t part of our allocated spending money, so either myself or her would put forth the investing). I need to see about getting some caps on their way before the Bonneville Speed Week is over with now.

Bags, backpacks, and duffles. Ended up ordering more than I planned, but I’m hoping the backpacks will sell well (especially if I put logos on and pitch to some principals).

Gift bags and gift wrap. This is for our gift shop, hopefully we’ll be getting more walkin business as Christmas draws in, people will be needing wrapping paper and stuff!

Incense. It’s probably one of our top sellers in the shop, unfortunately we only move it ~$2 at a time. We picked up some new flavors, some lighters, and some more burners from the folks at Wildberry.

Various toys, culinary items, and tools. Ordered from the same company, was a bit strange “let me take some of those singing ducks, and toss in some of those 23 piece knife sets with cutting boards. There was also a 130 piece socket set on the cheap, so I picked up a case of those since I think I can easily resell them at $10-15.

Some baby clothing. My mom visited a vendor she bought from in March to pick up more baby clothes. The clothes are 100% cotton, so we can personalize em quite easily.

Interesting things we saw:
Saw a really interesting thing that is almost like a giant pill. When you add water to it, it unfolds out into a wet napkin. Dunno what we’d ever use it for, but it was interesting. In theory, hunters could use it, but they have either a hand, or leaves, or etc for whatever use it may be (blowin noses, wipin brown eyes, etc).

We also saw some neato toilet paper roll holders. My mom was almost tempted to buy the wolf one.

We visited Casi’s booth, since we have their Chroma Crystal system. I had to enquire about if they changed their transfer paper over the past three years since I bought the system. I’m almost out of the paper, but the images aren’t near as beautiful as the ones they’re making now (back when I bought it, their displays were similar to what I produced, now it’s probably twice-three times as good). I was told they did change a few things, but it may also be my printer. I was offered to try some of the newer paper and I will take them up on that offer.

Tomorrow’s plan:
Visit the Las Vegas Convention center for the Military part of the show (and hopefully get some airsoft guns)

Pick up some samples that are always sold on the last day, since most vendors don’t want to spend the time to repackage and ship their crap back.

Prepare to go home (still need to meet up with my brother before we leave Thursday morning).

Here’s the updates to Yesterday’s lists:

Things I'm surprised we didn't see (update from yesterday):
“Very little stuff for "adult oriented" stores.” There was a bit more that we saw this go. For a moment I thought my mom was asking a sales rep how much a bong cost, but it turned out she was talking to the guy in the next booth who was standing dangerously close to said bong!

“Del Swain of Creative Photo Concepts” Still haven’t seen him.

“Very little duffle type bags, seen lots and lots of purses and such”. I found about 6 different vendor’s for these today. I picked one that seemed quite decent in quality and good in price as well.

Yesterday's plan for today!
“Finish walking the show”. – Didn’t get done, we spent too much time at other booths, so it looks like we won’t finish the show.

“I would like to purchase some AirSoft guns and ammo”. - The company I wanted to purchase these from are in a different convention center, I still plan on visiting them.

“Backpacks still need to be gotten as well as incense”. - This was completed

“We need to purchase some Halloween stuff, however we will also be on the lookout for some Christmas items as well”. - We bought some Christmas items, however the Halloween items are fairly disappointing. I bought a really awesome skull last August at this show, but the company may no longer carry it according to a sales rep.

“My dad was researching ATV's and such at the show, it might be something for us to try” - Didn’t do anything on this, lack of funds right now, so we will see next year.

Joe, kids love those giant pills that you put water on and they expand into a washcloth. I wondered if you could name drop on the outside of the giant pill container.
