Default You get only 10%?!

I heard from someone that you get only 10% of the sales amount as your profit? Plus Zazzle gets all kinds of permission to use your designs any way they want?
I think that stinks!

That's the deal. 10% flat fee.

They don't get all sorts of permissions though; the design you submit still belongs to you.

I think they increased the percentage to 17% now. At least that's what it seemed like when I was browsing the Zazzle site earlier this week.

Actually it's still 10%, and you get an additional 7% if you become an associate. I think 10% is fine; I mean, they're making, shipping and billing.

So lets see if you did shipping and making and billing and you shirt sells for $20.
Shirt, white cotton 1.25
Shipping (Under $3.00 US mail)But I get that from my customer.
Billing?
Hot peel transfer 75 cents. Ink cvost .50 cents Someone plug in screen printing as I do not do them but lets just have fun and say $3.00
So my tees sell for $20 retail from me and it cost me $2.50 so I just made 87% instead of 10%?? there is something wrong with that. and I am if it is screened what is the cost and profit. Still seems you could do better than 10%. That's not good business. I guess one of the reason I don't use that type of service. I can buy stock transfers and still make money way over 10%

I wouldn't buy this kind of t-shirt for $20, are you joking? That sounds like crapiest cotton t-shirt possible, sold over market price for that kind of item, which would be around $10-$15.

I think we may be missing the point. Some designers feel that it is important to be recognized be selection for one of these sites. Sort of like being included in ajuried art exibition. The payoff isn't the immediate sales. It has to be more in the celebrity of being on the sites and in future buiness that grows from that (or better margins). I wouldn't know. Had my ego surgically removed. I'm just an old guy trying to make a living, so I focus on keeping as much of my margin as possible. I agree with Lou's analytical approach. There is no way to increase your income short term, but I can understand the intangible benefits for some designers.

Well, this does not really apply to Zazzle and other fulfillment services though. EVERYONE is accepted, barring offensive or copyrighted designs. If they were talking about Threadless, then this would apply more.

The main advantage of these services is that they require NO startup costs whatsoever. You don't pay for any equipment or stock, and you make less money because of it.

do you know the shirt they use on cafepress. it is not about what I pay because it you could buy the shirt I use for $5. Check out the brand of these fulfillment houses.. they are not using $10 fashion shirts for your designs my friend.. It is about their bottom line also. Because I get good price don't think I am using crap. If you don't believe me ask others.

Then if you make them for $3 and sell for $20 without middle men then it's just an unreasonable margin.

That's not an unreasonable margin. It's called doing business.

If his customers are happy with the quality of the end product, and they think the price is reasonable for what they are getting, they will pay it. If not, they will go somewhere else and he will be out of business. Obviously he is not out of business, so his customers must think that $20 is a fair price for what they are getting. Let them decide what is "unreasonable".

well if I personally know that the product you sell for more then average price that costs less then average, I would never buy it.

There are plenty of other factors at play too. Good customer service? People wll pay more for that. Awesome original design? People will pay more for that too. There are many reasons why people would pay a little more than average.
