Default Vintage salt wash or new tshirt...help!

Ok, I have been working with hanes men's undershirts, just to test out the whole salt soak thing...to make a reg. tee have a vintage softness.

At first I attempted the sodium carbonate & salt in the washing machine, did it about 4 times...shirts still stiff.

Right now I have a few shirts soaking in the salt and water for the past day or so...letting them soak for 3 days.

The shirts are 100% cotton and I am wondering why this has not worked yet. I am doing this from home, am not interested in attempting an enzyme wash myself and was wondering if anyone knew a sure way to turn a regular tee vintage tee soft from home...even feeling the tees that I currently have soaking, feels like they are still rough.

Also, I am doing some tie dye designs and if I find a way to soften the shirts, do I soak them first then dye them or should they be dyed first??

Thanks, hope this made sense

Oh yeah, I'd like to add, if anyone knows of any cheap mens shirts that they know will soften OR that are already soft, let me know
