Default Banner question-grommet

I'm new to banners, so my questions are regarding printing on them (I have a vp 300) can I print on them if they have grommets

How easy or hard is it to put grommet in a banner?

Do you recommend getting the press or are the hand tools alright?

\Thanks for your help

Do not run pre gometted banner media through your VP! Even if they say it is safe, it will void any warranty you may have with roland. If the printhead happens to strike one of these gromets and gets damaged, they are very expensive to replace. Buy a gromet press. I got my press from All Graphic Supplies at a decent price and it has served me very well.

I've used pre-grommeted on my sp-540v and wasnt impressed. Grommets were cheap and was limited to certain lengths of banners. I use a hiker grommet machine and buy a box of grommets at a time. Buy a grometter and you won't regret it. The flexibility is worth the costs.

Thanks for the input-I never thought of the print head hitting one of the grommets. I was thinking about the pinch rollers. Looks like I need to go with a press..

One more question what weight of banner material do you recommend to hang outside on a baseball fence all summer.

Another question how far apart do you put you grommets? (on the four corners) for a 3' x 6' banner

Ok last question does all banner material have to be hemmed? if so do you put your grommet in the hem line or just to the inside of it?

Thanks alot for you input!!

standard 13oz should be more than ideal for the fence hanging. I normally only use 13oz except when it is being hung in the open and not against a surface. I then use a 16oz.

I normally space 24" apart. However with a 6' banner, you're probably fine with one in the middle and one on each end.

I hem all outside banners, but just use a fold over with 2 sided hemming tape from oracal. Has never failed me.

Thank you, just have 1 question: where you put you grommet on the hem or to the inside of the hem?

Thanks for your help.

Within the hemming area where the banner is doubled in thickness from the fold over.

On the banner material I have, the grommets are in the part where there are two layers of banner material. They do not penetrate where the banner is sewed but if you use the hem tape, that shouldn't be a problem.

This is what I mean by staying within the hemming are where it is doubled. do not pierce the gromet on the seam/where the stitch runs. always stay within the doubled up thickness area.

I have the roland sp540vp and if we do a banner bigger then 53" we print on a clear vinyl and just over lay it on the banner the vinyl not too expansave we just charge a little more it works great there are a few other tricks to like if they want something in white on the banner lets say a phone # we print the top halfe then stencel cut red vinyl and mix the two type since we design or change what they want to make it look better always works out. As far as the banner tape the one Im talking about is only singel sided its made for groumets its great for putting 2 banners togather we use 3m VHB tape I belive or there is a banner tape they have its just not as strong. hope I been a little help.

I forgot to ask you how much of a hem do you make 1" or 2" or somewhere in between?

is there something special that you do when you do the corners?

Thanks again
