HI,
Yes, You can differentiate an Organic & a non Organic stuff by seeing at the label (as per GOTS labeling standards). GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).
visit
New Standards Development - GOTs - Organic Trade Association
The working group is made up of the Organic Trade Association (OTA), The Soil Association (UK), International Association Natural Textile Industry (IVN) (Germany), and the Japan Organic Cotton Association and Organic Exchange etc; laid down the norms for organic cotton.
The current version GOTS is V2. Every entity in the value chain right from cotton cultivation to till the T’s delivered (Farmer, Ginner, Spinner, Weaver, Bleacher, dyer, printer, retailer, brands, packer, all accessories, dyes, pigments, chemical suppliers must undergo organic certification process through certification bodies like IMO & Control Union. Who audits each entity involved in value chain as per GOTS before issuing the certificate.
In the value chain every entity involved in the manufacturing of Organic T’s has to issue a transaction certificate to the next entity down the value chain, that it has been processed as per GOTS and should issue a copy of GOTS.
As a consumer you can demand the transaction certificates.
Counterfeits is big problem, can be identified by demanding transaction certificates.
For further info visit the link given in the beginning.
Note: I am a chemical supplier (INK) for organic printing and it took us 1 year for getting a GOTS certificate after testing Toxicity (RAT LD-50etc) and bio-degradability, AZO,PVC, Phthalates, Tin compounds, Heavy metals, PCP, Formaldehyde etc for all our 80 odd chemicals .
Hope the info is useful for you. I feel it is bit lengthy.
Vijay
