Default Bamboo t-shirts from oversease

Bamboo t-shirts seem to be gaining popularity as the years progress. I guess this is partly due to the on-going "green" revolution. If you are planning on importing some bamboo t-shirts from China, just beware. Some importers have been duped by Chinese sellers such as these ones:

Quote:
Dear Mr. Williams:

In your letter dated March 22, 2007 you requested a classification ruling on behalf of your client Kindnoon Offshore Trading Co., Ltd. Our response was delayed due to laboratory analysis. As requested, your sample will be returned to you.
The submitted sample, style KN014, is a woman’s pullover. Although you identify the fiber content as 70% bamboo, 25% cotton, and 5% lycra, U.S. Customs & Border Protection laboratory analysis has determined that the fiber content is 62% rayon, 32% cotton, and 6% spandex.

Quote:
Dear Mr. Price:
In your letter dated December 21, 2006, you requested a tariff classification ruling. Your response was delayed due to laboratory analysis.

Style US9V is a men’s T-shirt constructed from finely knit jersey fabric that weighs 170 grams per square meter. The garment has a rib knit, mitered V-neckline; short, hemmed sleeves; screen printing at the rear neckline; and a straight, hemmed bottom.
In your correspondence, you state that the fiber content of Style US9V is 70% bamboo, 30% Tencel (lyocell). Laboratory analysis has found that the fabric is composed of 100% rayon, a regenerated cellulose fiber. Regenerated cellulose fibers are considered artificial fibers.

Dear Ms. Trimble:
In your letter dated October 25, 2006, you requested a tariff classification ruling on behalf of Shanghai Tex. Your response was delayed due to laboratory analysis. As requested, your samples will be returned.
Although you identify the garments as constructed from 100% bamboo, laboratory analysis has found that all of the garments are constructed from 100% rayon fibers.
Style PSM006 is a polo-style shirt constructed from 100% rayon, pique knit fabric that measures 10 stitches per linear centimeter counted in the horizontal direction and 19 stitches per linear centimeter counted in the vertical direction.
Quote:
Dear Mr. Tsui:

In your letter dated August 22, 2006, you requested a tariff classification ruling on behalf of your client, Brigata International, Inc. Your response was delayed due to laboratory analysis.
Style 8BC01 is a men’s shirt constructed from pique knit fabric that measures 12 stitches per linear centimeter counted in the horizontal direction and 21 stitches per linear centimeter counted in the vertical direction. Although the fiber content is stated as 70% bamboo, 30% cotton, laboratory analysis has found that the fiber content is 67.1% regenerated cellulose, 29.1% cotton, 3.8% elastomeric yarn. Regenerated cellulose is considered an artificial fiber.
If you are planning on importing a lot of bamboo apparel, I suggest you get multiple samples from the supplier and send it off to an independent lab or the US Customs for analysis.

Also, FYI, the US Customs has now classified 100% bamboo t-shirts as " 6205.90.4040, HTSUSA, which provides for Men’s or boys’ shirts: Of other textile materials: Other, Other." Before, they classified bamboo fabric as man-made, which is now ruled incorrect. This classification change will have implications on your duty rate (tax) for importing goods.

Yes, it's previous classification was taxed at (29.1 cents/kg + 25.9%) of the total value of the goods. It's new classification is only taxed at 2.8%.

Wow, it sounded like it would be for the better - but that's a big difference.
