I was wondering the same thing.

Or can you have one "blanket" company that owns the rest of your companies and just use that resale cert?

A few wholesale t-shirt companies require you to send them your resale certificate. So I am assuming you have to send one in for each company.

The way I was thinking was that you have your PARENT company buy all your t-shirts and supplies, and your child companies (sites and labels) would essentially purchase those shirts and supplies form your parent at cost. Seems to me to be a simpler way of doing it.

I just don't know about the legalites of actually SELLING under your parent company's resale certificate.

Your resale certificate comes from your state sale tax agency.

You just register for one resale certificate with the state you live in. That helps to establish you as a business that is collecting sales tax for orders and buying things wholesale (without tax) for the purposes of later resale.

Once you have this resale certificate, you then just provide either the number or a copy of the certificate to the wholesalers that you want to do business with.

They can then provide you with true wholesale pricing without charging tax as they know you are a person that will be buying wholesale to resell later (after decoration).

Yes, but do you need one for each brand you have or can you use one parent company to cover all others?

Or I did. After I re-read it, I'm not sure I answered correctly either.

That's where it gets tricky. I guess it would depend on how you report your taxes. Sounds like a question for your local state board of equalization.

That is the question I am trying to figure out right now. I am starting another website under a different name and I am trying to figure out how that will work with my current licenses.

Greetings Bobbie,

The answer to that question will probably take no more than 2 minutes, if you call your state department of revenue.

In Tennessee, if you are a corporation, you can have 10 websites and 5 companies and only the registered company would be a legal entity.

All the rest would be a dba of the parent company which would be responsible for filings and taxes for all.

Your question is important enough that your only safety is in knowing your state's requirements.

Cordially,

Jack

I dont think this would apply to me as I am a sole proprietor, although I am considering incorperating because it does seem to have some bennifits. I will have to see how this would effect me tax wise though with my and my husbands regular joint filing. I think as far as tax filing for us I needed it to be a sole proprietor. thanks Jack

You said file one with the state you live in. When I bring up Washington's it has a space for "Seller". Do I just leave this blank then? This is the only form I can find on the Washington State Department of Revenue.
