anymore help would be great. i really dont want to spend 20 bucks just to get one. does anyone know were i might beable to pick one up locally(walmart, target) or does anyone know another brand that uses them so i can look it over before i buy.
Not sure which style you're talking about specifically, but they are generally soft, high quality shirts. They are good for embroidery.
You can sort of judge the thickness of the shirt by looking at the weight. The heavier shirts will generally be thicker.
However, if you're really concerned about the quality, it may be worth buying one sample before you do a whole run of them. That way you can judge the quality for yourself (in case someone else's opinion is different than your own).

I wouldn't assume that
Some fabric types aren't the best for transfers (like pique knit polos).

I would also note that everyone's opinion is different. What works for me might not work for you.
I just don't want you to run out and buy 100 shirts because "Rodney said so" when your own quality needs and printing needs may require something totally different.
