they designate the width of the "peaks and valleys" of the rib. A 1x1 has "peaks" the same width as the "valleys". 1x2 has "peaks" that are either twice as wide as the "valleys" or are half as wide, I can't remember for sure. Someone here will though.

I am enclosing a photo of a tank we sell that is a Silver for Her Hanes Cami 1x1 rib. The fabric isnt ribbed at all its quite flat. Ribbed and Rib I think might define two completely different characteristics. I am wondering if RIB doesnt mean length?
the term "rib" isn't used for length. rib is knit different then regular jersey, there is some stretch to it. just like they said above there are ridges in it that allow some stretch. rib is used for the collar on a tshirt, or cuff on a long sleeve shirt. you can also get combed cotton rib which is very soft and stretchy. cotton rib shirts are popular with the women right now. some people call them "girlie" shirts. they are form fitting and usually shorter in length. hope that helps. edski.
hi moto, 1 x 1 rib is a little stretchy and not that noticeable, now a 2 x 1 rib is VERY stretchy and noticeable. they used to make tanks for the old timers out of 2 x 1 rib, they were very stretchy. i don't see 2 x 1 rib used too often anymore. good luck! Edski.
