No the vinyl will not hurt your vehicle. But there are vinyls that you will want to use. Use a vinyl that is rated to last outdoors for at least 6 to 8 years. Standard vinyls after a year in the will fade, and become a hassle to remove. Also some paint jobs (Older Dodge, Chevy and sometime Jeeps had bad primers) will chip when pealing off the old vinyl. Vinyl will not let UV light fade the paint underneath vinyl, so after you remove the old vinyl, the paint will look just as it did when you applied the decal.
Hope these help...

Also make sure the car is not freshly painted. I put some vinyl on a truck that was out of the paint shop for 2 weeks. When I took the vinyl off, it peeled up the paint in some spots. I'm pretty sure the paint job was shotty( poor prep)
