I have a new customer that needs two-color decals cut and was wondering how to go about doing this. These decals are going on car windows, so I'd like to mail it to him as a single-application decal (as if it were one color).

Basically it's a black outline with a colored shape inside, and the two colors in his design do not overlap - they're separated by a quarter inch or so of empty space.

Is there any way to put the decal together before mailing it to the customer, so that he can just apply it in one shot (like he would a single-color decal)?

Yes there is a way.
All you have to do is use registration marks (you can do it by eye, but for the begginer reg.marks are best).
See this picture


I used round reg. marks althoug I recommend square reg. marks.

What you do is:
1.Open your design in your favorite designing software.
2.Draw 2 or more squares and fill with one of the design color (in my case blue)
3.Copy the squares and paste in front and fill them with the other color in the design (in my case white). You should have the blue squares beneath the white squares.
4.Cut your design.
5.use your transfer tape to pick up the TOP layer (in my case white)
6. Align your reg. marks on the transfer tape with the reg. marks in the other part of the decal.
7. Lay down. Squeegee. Trim, remove the reg. marks.

Thanks alot for the info, makes perfect sense now.

One more question - what kind of transfer paper is that? I use white paper transfer paper and it's much more difficult a material to use than what he's using, it looks like.

If you notice from the post above and probably the video(haven't seen it yet) you will notice he taped his to a window, which allows the light to come from behind and make registration a whole heck of alot easier. I use my exposure unit light to make the registrations. Good luck.

I suggest you use clear tape for layering, but regular tape will do. Just do what toreesigns said.

I actually did this for the first time yesterday. I used regular application tape, medium tack. Basically you do the following:

1. weed your colors
2. apply app. tape to first color
3. peel first color from backing paper
4. apply app. tape with first color to second color
5. peel first/second color from backing paper
6. apply app. tape with first /second color to third color

On your last color, just leave it on the backing paper - this is your completed decal. Make sure you make registration marks on all of the colors so that you can align the layers properly.
