Smile Application Tape

Has anyone used masking tape as an application tape? My wife says a shop she worked at a few years ago used it instead of buying application tape. Can anyone offer any cons on using masking tape verses application tape?

I would suggest you stay away from masking tape. First, it's adhesive is much stronger than application tape, so you are going to have issues with the vinyl "lifting" when you try to remove the masking. Second, you are going to have to work harder putting pass after pass of 1'' or 2'' masking tape over your graphic.

Application tape is made to be used and thrown away, so it seems a waste of money sometimes, but using the proper tools for the job greatly improve your chances of doing a good job.

I wouldn't cut corners or try to reinvent the wheel.

Thanks thats what I was thinking also. I want to do a job and do it right. In a small town cutting corners can really hurt in sales.

Pat cutting corners will hurt your business in general. The competition is brisk and the people not excelling is failing. ..... JB

Myself I think transfer tape is cheaper then masking tape, so I don't think you'd be cutting corners. But there's no way in %^$# I'd ever use masking tape as transfer tape.

I didn't mean to imply that cost was the reasoning behind my post. I only meant that you should use the products that are made for the job you are doing. I would never use masking tape as application tape, either.

Ya know .. is she sure it was really masking tape they used.. Ive never seen masking tape as wide as what most app tape you would use would be lol..
Application tape looks alot like masking tape only thinner and not as bumpy..

I think the adhesive in masking tape would leave sticky behind.. i donno..

I did learn that application tape does not make good masking tape.... it dont hold..

Sue's right, it looks like a giant roll of masking tape, but it is not:

It is the industry standard, so you cannot go wrong.

ok......you've been given alot of ribbing about this

Masking tape will create ALOT of buffles and ridges in your graphic. One piece of transfer tape, bubble-less and crease-less gets the job done

Gotta love no hassles.

OOo and a side note on application tape..
we buy it in ful 48" wide rolls.. and have the supplier cut it in the widths that we need.

we keep a extra of each width in stock as we use alot.. of tape.. and have it cut into all sizes from 24 inches down to 1 inch.

The supplier will make 6 cuts in the roll at no charge..
and its more economical buying it that way.. ..
