I am wondering, I am doing a backlit sign with black lettering, is using translucent black necessary? Its going to show up black at night and day either way. Any problems w/ using standard black vinyl on a backlit sign?

nope, you'll be just fine with regular cast vinyl (do NOT try to do a lighted sign with intermediate vinyl, it'll bite you in the end!!)
