Question Coffee mug done with vinyl

I know I read somewhere on the forums that someone was using Oracal ?? to print on mugs. Do I need a heat press? Can you just use hand pressure, does it stand up to use and dishwashing? I'm very new to the business and am trying to find a nitch to fill.
Thanks,
Norma

I have done vinyl on mugs before. You should NOT use a heat press, if you do you will wish you hadn't, the vinyl will melt. They are not dishwasher safe and shouldn't be used for anything other than a decoration. If you even use hot water in them the adhesive will soften and the decal will come off or slide around and you would then have a worthless mug with sticky stuff (adhesive) all over it. If I was you I'd find another niche.

Do you fill your car with 150°F coffee?? and then steam it in the dishwasher?

Vinyl will stick, but not stay. For a 1-off thing it might work, but probably look very cheesy. Sublimate them instead.

Unless you apply the vinyl as a stencil and then use a paint/glaze for pottery. When touch dry remove vinyl and cure however way it's done.

i use oracal as a stencil to etch glass mugs and cups.

i also tried to paint the glass this way, but when you remove the vinyl stencil you get sone blurry paint edges.

When you painted them did you use regular vinyl or did you use the paint mask that is made specifically for painting? Also you need to remove the masks while the paint is wet so it doesn't stick to the mask.

I put it on a traveling mug, the stainless steel kind and it stuck better then it does to a car window, it went through the dishwasher without any problems too. I was just goofing around to try it and yes it worked a hellva lot better then I thought it would.

Dave a travel mug is insulated and this would help when filled with hot coffee. As far as dishwasher it will shorten the life and adhearsion due to the heat and jetted water.

Believe me Brian, it did NOT shorten the life of the vinyl. It was on there for well over a yr and when I tried to take it off it was next to impossible. Again I was just goofing around with one of my old travel mugs and I wouldn't recommend doing this for any kind of sale, but that is just my experience with it.

Hey Dave, what type of vinyl did you use for this? I want to try this out. I just want to experiment a little too. .... JB

I had an emergency situation for a friend of mine this past month. She is the dance instructor at our local high school and she needed glasses imprinted for their banquet. She is a last minute shopper and couldn't get anything but blank wine glasses. She uses me for vinyl signs and screenprinted t's, so she called me. I told her we could try it with vinyl. They are decorative wine glasses, not intended for actual use... but, so that she could see the design before we did all of them, I put the cut vinyl on one of my own drinking glasses to show her. I warned her not to use them and wash them, especially in the dishwasher! Well, I did all of them and they turned out BEAUTIFUL!! Now, I still had the glass of my own that we did to show her and it just sat on my counter for a few days. One of the kids finally used it and it ended up in the dishwasher... It held up. Now over six weeks later, that glass has been repeatedly used and washed, both by hand with a dish pad and in the dishwasher. It is still perfect. I don't know how LONG it will hold up, but it is still going strong.

I used Oracal 651, in gold and black.
