anyone have any experiance with sign vinyl on wood
I was woundering if any one has tried sign vinyl on wood and if so what was the outcome. i was thinking of using some on unfinished wood may reflective any thoughts.
Re: anyone have any experiance with sign vinyl on wood
Well the product is ment to be unfinished. it could be painted but i havnt seen anyone paint it. i was thinking of selling the decals for this particular product but i dont want it to be falling off. this product will not be in the sun very much it is meant to be used at night.
Re: anyone have any experiance with sign vinyl on wood
The sun is not the problem, it's the adhesive. It's just meant to grip certain things, if the right conditions don't exist it will just fall off.
I know that 3M sells a vinyl for digital printing that will adhere to just about anything (including a brick wall) by use of a heat gun, but it's not going to available in reflective colours. Forgot what it's called.
If you're serious about this I would call your vinyl supplier and ask them to send you some samples, test them out on the wood for a month or two and see what happens.
Re: anyone have any experiance with sign vinyl on wood
I'm not really sure what it is that you want to do, but the vinyl can also be used as a stencil, and maybe the exposed area can be treated with something so that the image remains on the wood. I'm thinking like a stain or paint.
I make vinyl decals, but I also use the vinyl as stencils for sandblasting the same images I use for decals onto glass.

Hi, yes it holds up very well . Of course you want to make sure you are not using cheap quality vinyl. When I first started doing this, I would by assorted scraps from a local place, and vinyl that was obviously too thin / transparent would tear away during blasting. I then started using vinyl bought from elsewhere which has since been holding up very, very well. I've only recently learned that there's many kinds of vinyl and brands, but I'm very confident that the vinyl I have been using for my sandblasting is calendered vinyl, and of course cast vinyl would work as well. I'll be saving my new Oracal 651 for decals .
To help save vinyl, I only use vinyl to create the stencil, any part of the glass that will not be sandblasted is covered with duct tape. My school has a huge industrial sandblaster, the psi pressure can be adjusted but I usually just use whatever it's set too, never pay attention but I think it's about 80-ish psi - you can feel when it needs to be increased or decreased. After that, a good soaking in warm soapy water will help easily remove both the vinyl and duct tape. I made these for a friend:

Don't do it its gonna fall off. in 10 nyears i have never bin able to get vinyl to stick to bare wood long enough to sell to a customer and if i sell stickers to someone that puts it on bare wood they always come back saying it wont stick
DON'T DO IT.... m2c Don

your glasses are 'cute', do you use the oracal 651 for your stencils. annd do you have to make a new stencil for each glass or are you able to use the same stencil each time (i'm guessing you need to make a new stencil for each glass (or what ever you are doing).
Thanks for the pic.

Hi, thanks for the glass comment . I have not used Oracal 651 for my stencils yet, but I'm very confident it would hold up. Before finding this site, I would purchase vinyl by the yard from a local shop, and my selection was based on price not by brand or quality specifications. Through this site I learned that I basically knew nothing about vinyl , but have learned so much since. I still have a lot of 'by the yard' vinyl, and the back is either blank, or it's made by Avery. I would say what I have is about an intermediate calendered vinyl. Just to be safe, I would not recommend using anything less than intermediate. I have since ordered Oracal 651, but for now I won't use it for stencils until I have used up all my 'by the yard' vinyl. I'll save the good stuff for decals.
I don't reuse my stencils, and probably wouldn't be a good idea since it's exposed to high pressure blasting, making it a little weaker (but not enough to tear holes). Plus it would be very tricky to remove it all in one piece. My stencils are pretty small, so I don't mind having to make several. Sorry for the long answer !
