Hi. I just purchased a Roland GX-24 cutter and would like to start making some car window decals. Do I need to order a specific size roll? They come in all sizes, and I wasn't sure if I had to order a specific size. I've been reading the threads posted and the Oracal seems to be the best. Also, what mil size do I need for my application tape?
Thanks so much. You guys have been soooo helpful.
I would start with the 15" wide roll. It is cheaper and when you position the decals you can get a lot in the width.
As far as the tape, It doesn't have to be very thick, but I find that if the customer can see the decal through it, it makes them feel more comfortable.
Thanks a lot. So, something like a 2mil tape would probably be good? What supply company gives the best deals? I live in NH, and have only checked out the ones that t-shirt forums have recommended.

My recommendation:
R-Tape Clear Choice AT-60
-It's easy to work with, conformable, and looks great applied to the face of your vinyl decals (for selling to customers).
-15" x 100yd is a good size that can be applied without a table roller if you are just starting out (24" would better complement the vinyl rolls your GX-24 can handle, but is very awkward to apply without a proper setup).
Hi, I've been making stickers for a while, but I've only recently learned about the different types and brands of vinyl available - before I was just trusting whatever TAP Plastics sold me. I'm new to Oracal 651, chose it based on what I read here (for single color vinyl decals, for cars). But haven't cut it yet.
Just wanted to mention, in case you didn't know, you can request a FREE Oracal vinyl color chart as well as FREE samples of Oracal vinyl at: ORACAL USA
You'll need to register your info, but it's worth it (you don't have to be a business). Mine just arrived in the mail today, and the chart is better than expected! Great to have if you plan on using different Oracal colors, and the vinyl samples come in handy too if you're having trouble choosing the right series for you.
Some sites try to sell you an Oracal chart, then give you a credit that's good for your next purchase. Totally free from the Oracal website.
I actually use alot of calendared vinyl for just cut vinyl stickers on cars and signs..
we use the house brand from sign-mart.com.. Our shop has been in business for over 16 years and I have seen both vehicles and signs done 5 years ago or so that are still in great shape.. I think alot of it has to do with how its applied and such as to how long things last..
I've been checking out sign mart and found the house brand. Very nice price! When would you use another vinyl? I noticed you used Oracle 751 on the van you did. Would the Sign-mart brand not work for car graphics? Please help.

We use the house brands for most applications..
If there are complex curves we then to go with the oracal..
the reason we used the oracal on that van is because of the color we needed.. the light green..
We have had absolutely no problems with using the house brand from sign mart on anything..
I have signs and banners out there in direct sun that have been up for 5 years and the vinyl still looks great on them..
Thanks, I was looking at the wrong one. Ugh. Does Sign-Mart offer a color chart or sample cards of the colors in Permagloss? I guess I could look, huh? LOL
