I just purchased a vinyl cutter last month for my tshirt business and would like take advantage of the cutter by adding vinyl decals for cars, windows, etc. to my store. I really have no idea where to start doing research and wanted to know if anyone could point me in the direction of a "vinyl decal 101" getting started information. I see that there are lots of different brands and different kinds of vinyl which confuses me. Is there somewhere that would explain what type of vinyl is used for what application? Like a chart or something? My biggest questions are the following:
1. What is the difference between "no name" vinyl sold on ebay and the brand name vinyls.
2. Can vinyl that is used for the body of a vehicle be used on a window or are they 2 separate vinyls?
3. If I want to expand and make custom vinyl for ipods, laptops, video game systems, plastic, glass, aluminum, etc... do those require different vinyl as well?
4. Is there an "all in one" type vinyl that is universal to be used on anything?
5. What qualities do I look for when purchasing application tape? Does all decal vinyl required application tape?
6. As I mentioned earlier, is there chart/guide or something that would explain what type of vinyl is used for what application?
Sorry for all the questions, I'm clueless when it comes to vinyl decal. I'm hoping someone who is a pro can answer any my questions.
1. The no name vinyl on Ebay is fine for smaller decals and such, but the problem you run into is you dont know the grade of vinyl. You have 2 main types of vinyl for decals. Calendered and cast. Calendered has a shorter outdoor life span and doesnt conform to the irregular surfaces on many autos. The cast vinyl cost more but will give you less headaches while applying.
2. these are the same in respect to application. I find Oracal 651 calendered works great for much of what I do but a good cast vinyl is better than a great calendered everyday.
3. You can use the same vinyl but its a "once its on, its on" kinda deal. The adhesive is much stronger and more likely to stick at the wrong moment. There are "prepositional" materials better suited for this kinda work.
4. Simply put, no.
5. I like a medium tack and if I have to layer 2 or more colors, I prefer a clear tape. If Im using a standard tape, I prefer EZ tear. I hate having the micro strands of adhesive all over like you get with a cheaper brand. Look for R-tape, my personal favorite and the best you can buy IMHO.
6. Go to the manufacture sites and read the Product Info sheet they provide. i wealth of knowledge right there. Avery, Oracal, Shinerite and Permacast, 3M and FMC are just a few to start with. I started using Shinerite and Permacast as of late and love its workability and cost per sq. ft.
not only may the vinyl on ebay not be good quality.. It can be old..which affects the vinyl alot..
Vinyl does have a selve life and goes bad if it sits a long time
Remember, most decal work is considered "throw away" work. Some of this vinyl is great for jobs you know will be for very short life like stickers to announce events or in my case paintball players. If you know the brands and series, you can find some really good deals. Just dont go thinking you can do your shopping for garment and sign material there without some research. I bug the hell out of the sellers to find out all I can before I buy. Ill be starting the Thermal Printing end of my business soon and I can pick up a crap load to practice with and sell as short run and short life throw aways for very inexpensive.

651 does last the best out of the calendered. I seen a van I did 6 years ago the other day and it wasnt faded or peeling. Im in sunny Florida, so for the vinyl to last on a vehicle that long shows for something.
I use mostly 651 Oracal also and really have good luck with everything I cut. I live in Iowa so I can't do any applications in the winter but I do wall sayings and mount a lot of different things on tile and plexiglas.
Very helpful info. Thanks for sharing everyone. Does anyone know any vinyl suppliers that are located in Florida who carry the Oracal 651 vinyl or Thermoflex plus? I'm looking for fastest shipment time. Thanks in advance.

Helpful info, thank you! Were you referring to "FDC" when you suggested using "FMC" vinyl?
Also, who actually makes Shinerite? I read Ameriban, then I saw an old link to www.shineritevinyl.com and neither were found as companies with a site. Is this product only sold through distributors?

Yeah I meant FDC. As far as Shinerite, Im told its on an AVERY backer. Now you can make of that what you will. I like it because you can thermal print both the Shinerite and Permacast. This way I have Long life or inexpensive for my printing.
