Ok folks! I am interested in how much the vinyl print on this sign would cost to make, if I had a vinyl cutter. I am going to be making signs similar to these with a friend and was wondering whether it would be worth it or not to buy a vinyl cutter.
The vinyl fits inside of an 18 x 5.5 frame. Any ideas? I've gotten various quotes, but am only interested in how much it would cost to make on my own with a vinyl cutter.
Find a vinyl supplier and price out a roll of vinyl - measure your image area and divide that into the total size of the roll and you can figure out your cost. Maybe a buck of material, if that - not counting your labor, which will be very expensive at the beginning if you've never done vinyl work before
Hello everyone, I purchase a use vinyl Express cutter, I don't have any idea how to use it would some one please let me know where I can see any videos to show me how to use it. I need to do some numbers. Thank you in advance
Of course it depends upon the grade of vinyl that you are using. I use Oracal 651 and I "cost" it at $1 foot (24 inches wide). My actual cost is usually lower ($0.65 foot) but with S&H I consider $1 a good number to use. You need to allow for some space between designs so allowing for 1 foot for this type of sign would be good. Oracal 651 will last 5 years outdoors so it may be a good choice for this type of sign. One of your concerns should be how smooth the wood will be. Any grain on the surface of the wood will allow water to get behind the vinyl and loosen the the adhesive. You may want to seal the surface so moisture cannot get behind the vinyl.
Thanks all for your answers! I took this to a shop and it cost me $30!! I have been thinking about getting a Roland for quite a while. This definitely makes me want to do it!
If all you are doing are letters like this you may want to consider a lower cost cutter. I bought a 34" Seiki Tech on Ebay for under $400 and have used it daily for almost two years (made over 2000 signs). Their blades are inexpensive and last fairly long. There is also US Cutter on Ebay that prices cutters similar but I do not have any experience with them. There are advantages to the better cutters, but you may not need it. BTW, $30 is very steep. I usually charge customers just a few dollars for something like that (using 651), especially if the art is done.
