Can I use the same vinyl cutter to make decals AND t-shirts?
Hi
Im new to this forum so please go easy.
My question is this..... I am looking at buying a vinyl plotter for cutting die cut vinyl stickers and was wondering If I would be able to use this to produce tshirt graphics.
Is it just the roll of vinyl I need to change in order to produce vinyl for tshirts as this would have to be heat sealed on?

Hi James and Welcome to the T-Shirt forum.
You are correct, there is vinyl for outdoor use that has a sticky back like Oracal,3M and Avery. Then there is cuttable heat transfer media like Sizer and Thermoflex which has a heat activated glue.
You can tell the difference between the 2 types by the backing material the Sign Vinyl will have a usually white paper backing where the heat transfer media will have a clear backing.

Yes, you just pull out the pieces you don't want. This is called "weeding". Also, on the vinyl for shirts, from my experience, you may have to adjust your knife pressure in order to get it to cut all the way through the vinyl (but not the backing).

Great thanks guys.
I currently get my vinyl stickers made by a third part these are to stick onto things such as mountain bikes and car windows. They come to me with a front and a back on. I peel the backs off stick to the desired surface and then rub onn and pull the rest of the paper off. Is this the same sort of principal that you were telling me about. Have the just cut them and then stuck the paper back on to send to me.
Also will a plotter work with a mac as I am ac based and if so what programme should I use. I currently use Illustrator for designing my graphic.

If you have the vinyl cutter and the vinyl, then you would be able to make the decals yourself. You would just need the clear application tape to put on the back of the vinyl decal after you cut it with the cutter and weed it.

You should be able to use your cutter with a mac. Be sure to check with the equipment supplier you buy it from to make sure their cutter is compatible. Many cutters come bundled with software you can use.
