Can someone clarify for me, is a vinyl sticker and a vinyl decal the same thing? If so, is calling your sticker a “vinyl sticker decal” sort of a bad thing. When I grew up a decal was something you applied with water and it normally did not go on to well and certainly did not last very long. Would you be better off calling is a “Vinyl Sticker”
Re: Is it a Vinyl Sticker or a Vinyl Sticker Decal?
.....hhmmmm with out looking it up as it were. To me a Decal is a inked printed sticker. Like the paper sticky of fav hero.....so I looked it up....A decal (pronounced /ˈdiːkæl, ˈdiːkəl/) or transfer is a plastic, clothpaper or ceramic substrate that has printed on it a pattern that can be moved to another surface upon contact, usually with the aid of heat or water. The word is short for "decalcomania." The word Decalcomania is derived from the French word "decalquer," and was coined by Simon François Ravenet about 1750. The "mania" was added during the Decal craze of the late 1800s.

I agree with you. Vinyl is vinyl and it's a sticker. Just do a google search for "vinyl decal" and see how many people discribe their vinyl as decals. I'm sticking with vinyl stickers

Ditto- "Decal" implies more value than a "sticker." Stickers are something you buy from Wally World for the kids to play with. Decals sell for more money and are higher quality.

This is interesting to me. It must be a generation gap thing. I am 45 years old and to me one example of a decal is what use to come with the model cars I bought as a kid. You had to soak them in water and try to slide them onto a model car. For the average kid they never went on right, full of wrinkles and air bubbles. Once dried they quickly became brittle and flaked off over time. I bet you ask a 40+ year old person if they want a decal on their car and they will tell you no way. I’m not trying to cause a debate or get people mad but that is what decal means to us older guys.

Vinyl Graphics. If someone wants more details, tell them you work with vector graphics and not bitmap images. Chances are they will nod and say oh okay, how much? : )

Not all of us "older guys" I'm right on your heels on age wise. I'd say it's probably more of a regional thing then an age thing.

I was thinking the exact same thing about the age thing. I'm almost 39. If somebody has been around the sign business for even a short time, they will learn that sign makers strictly use the word decals and are in fact almost insulted when somebody calls our decals stickers. When we make stickers, they are made of paper almost always unless the product name is something like "bumper sticker" and we did print them on vinyl. Even then, we hate to use the word sticker.
Re: Is it a Vinyl Sticker or a Vinyl Sticker Decal?
I dont think sign guys myself included, when doing a strorefront window with lettering would talk with the owner about the project in the terms stickers or decals. It is generally cad cut vinyl lettering or graphics. Now what I call it really doesnt matter because the general public interchanges the terms all the time.
For me stickers are inexpensive peel and stick.
Decals as mentioned remind me of the water applied model maker graphics but I think now get interchanged with stickers daily.

Stickers are for kids....hehehe.
Over 40 years old and see stickers as paper smiley faces or simple text.
