I was just wondering if there was a standard for players names on the backs of jerseys or other garments. Is it normal to squeeze larger names to fit within say 13"? or to scale the name?
Anyone know a general rule of thumb?
Thanks.
When I do Cheerleading warmups, I have to squeeze some names onto the backs. I start out with the longest name and work my way down, making sure each one looks ok on its own. I try to keep it as uniform as possible but some years its more noticeable. Sometimes I have to cut down on the space between the letters and the width of each also.
No standard for me, just whatever looks good.

I try to size it so that all the letters are the same height on each jersey and make them proportional off the height. I found this to be my best way of getting everyones name to look the same. Length - it is what it is.....

That's about what I have been doing. I use 2" height, what kind of width do you guys use?
Nothing set. I use Flexi and set the height, then input all the names. Adjust the width for the longest name to look good and go down the line. If the shortest names don't look good I might make those letters a little wider. I can then see all the names at once. If I'm still not sure I will put a pen in the plotter and look at it full size on paper.

When I order names from Transfers Express (sometimes I do this for large Qty. to save time) they give options of 8' width or 11 inch width, then they squeeze the names to fit the width. This is what I try to do but for adults I use 12 inches as a max width.
I think the standard would be collage or pro sports teams and what they do. Has anyone ever noticed?
I know the whole issue is not to important for names on t-shirts or hoodies but I think its important for jerseys to be uniform.
I ran into trouble with this when I had to make 50 hockey jerseys for a team that already had players with jerseys made by someone else. My jerseys needed to match the old ones so the whole team did not need to buy new ones.
I had the customer measure the height and width of the letter "A" in a long name and a short name to see how the old jerseys names where set. The heights where uniform at 2" but the letters where squeezed on long names.
Thanks to everyone for your input.
By the way what font do most of you guys use for the names?

If I'm not mistaken, college/pro jerseys use the same height, but push in the width for longer names. That's what we do. Most of the time we use franklin gothic condensed. Simple readable text. I think we do 150 or 175 point (I usually don't do the creation or ironing myself).
