Default Roland CX24 Can't get it set up

I am a newbie and after 2 1/2 days of trying to get my cutter set up, I am asking for help.
I bought a Roland CX24 used and it came with no software. I downloaded the Firmware and Drivers from Roland DGA and have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled them several times.
I am trying to print/cut from Illustrator and/or SignCut2 and it will not cut. Do I have to have cutting software? Is CutStudio a good one for very basic cutting? (I don't plan on anything major for awhile) I am running XP, the cutter is hooked up to my laptop via a USP cable.
A couple things worth mentioning...
The guy I bought it from gave me a demo and I have done a couple test cuts, it works fine.
I have gotten it to communicate with the laptop a couple times and it generated error messages (out of range and CMD).
Does anyone have any setup tips?
I can't afford Flexi right now si I am looking at CutStudio or the Flexi Starter edition.... any thoughts?
Thanks in advance, Kari

Cut studio is a great program to cut with. That is what I use with corel. It's affordable and easy to learn and not pricy like some software.

There are some good training and setup videos on you tube. Also, Josh Ellsworth at Imprintables is a pro at this machine, maybe they can help you.

Cut Studio is normalloy sent with your Roland (new) Ask the person you bought it from if they have the disk. If not you can contact Roland and get one I am sure. The next thing is what computer are you working with. VISTA???? if so you need the drivers for Vista.. Is your computer new, 64 bit?? If so it will not work as the only drivers Roland has now are for 34 bit. They told me they are coming out with 64 bit early next year. Also Cutstudio can be a plug in for Illustrator and Corel draw. So when you get your design you simply hit the cut studio button and it sends you design to cut studio to be cut. Works great. If you have sign cut you have to be sure it recognizes the roland in thier driver. Lou

I use cutstudio as well and since you are running xp you should be in great shape, I have used both xp and vista with my custstudio and both do fine.
As mentioned I would also ask the guy you bought it from since he probably has the cut studio

Thanks for the info from each of you. I finally got the thing to cut - as of about 15 minutes ago!! I am using SignGo trial software. I think it is good for 30 days - that will at least get me through until I can get CutStudio.
The guy I bought it from is the second owner and had no software. He was using Flexisign that someone loaded direct to his laptop.
Thanks again - let the cutting begin!!!
Kari
