Default Cleaning dirty vinyl?

Hi guys (and gals),

I've been using this forum for ages for research so it's good to finally post (well not really - I wouldn't be posting unless I was stuck! ).

I'm using Hotflex Ultra to cut and weed designs which works a treat, I press them at home as I work full time while I try to build up my merchandise biz (for Speedway - I guess you call it Dirt Track in the US?).

Anyway that's where my problem begins...

We own a dog (Yellow Lab) and he sheds hair like you wouldn't believe! You do your best but in the end it's something you learn to live with - anyhoo, I've found that after weeding my HotFlex I've found hairs stuck to the sticky side of the positioning layer (Mylar?).

This is a real problem as NO-ONE is gonna want a tee with pressed Labby intertwined and as I operate on a 'to order' basis with a small markup it can kill any margin if I have to repress because of this.

SO. What I wanted to know is after weeding is there something I can clean the sticky side with that won't damage the glue or vinyls application?

Any advice would be greatly received.

interesting question Lol ... hmm I would use those lint/hair rollers that have a sticky tape on it to grab animal hair and lint of suit, clothe ect...

use sticky thing to remove thing off sticky thing Lol good theory huh

That shouldddd work but and that a big but.. if it don't than some diluted soap in water?
If you can use that for wet mounting vinyl onto a surface without haring adhesive than should work fine in your little problem

You can use a simple lint roller, I use one all the time and it works great, do inspect the vinyl before you press though.

Hello Alan!

Welcome to Quality Assurance 101. You are already thinking correctly in that no one wants a product with dog hairs on it. But, I feel you should have a different mindset on how to resolve it.

Two quick stories:

1) I once received a heat applied sample from a well known supplier who many use products from here. I did not like that I saw long dog hairs on the backing of one of the materials.

2) I once saw a video online last year of a DTG contractor in Raleigh, NC that I was going to contact for pricing. While the video was running, a cute little cat walked across the work area and I left the site quickly.

IMO, both of these things are very unacceptable. Some people find it cute to show pics of animals in the work area, I don't. I dare not (knowingly) do business with someone who keeps product around animals and would be upset to get a shirt that a cat has possibly sat on before shipping. I have allergies and cat dander is not my friend. Animals walking across a business video, regardless of where the business is operated, I find unprofessional. I can understand dust/dust particles when product sits for lengthy periods but animal hair is a no-no.

With that being said, you need to put a basic QA plan in place and take it seriously, even though you work from home.

Simply put - do not have your product around your pet and vice versa under any circumstance. It may help to seal your materials in something in case your pet accidentally gets in your product room. Eyeball all of your product before usage given what has currently happened.

Blue your absolutely right and to be honest I hadn't even thought of allergies as no-one in my house suffers with any, I was talking with my wife and I think I might transplant the operation to my regular place of work - we have a studio there with a clean area (and no pets!) so apart from maybe a stray human hair here or there I should be able to keep thinkgs pretty clean and then use the lintel roller that has been suggested - many thanks everyone - it's great to have people to help.

I would also try using just plain masking tape, its not as sticky as a lint roller, so you won't have to worry about losing some of your lettering. Its cheap and low tack.
