Default "Scoring" The Backing

Is it common practice for anyone to always "score" the backing when cutting material?

I've just test cut a material and did not get to the scoring point, even after increasing my force greatly from my starting point. It weeds just fine, however. I've cut a similar material from a different company but was much lower on the force compared to what I'm cutting on now. I also find that this non-scoring situation occurs with thicker material (i.e., Flock) vs. a thinner material (i.e., Eco-Film, ThermoFlex).

I'm seeking advice on whether to continue increasing my force to the score point for this and other materials, or leave it as is (with no scoring) given that it weeds fine?

Thanks.

AB

I think youmay want to decrease the down force pressure a bit to stop this from happening.I think it is best not to score the mylar if at all possible. ... JB

Cool Re: "Scoring" The Backing

i'd have to agree here,if the material weeds fine thats all thats needed. no reason to put extra stress on your machine just to score the backing and with some vinyls this actually makes it harder to weed

no, you dont want to score the backing. This means that when it cuts thru, you have to pick the backing off and that can be a real pain in the butt.

I like to see a small denting from my blade so I know where to put a letter or piece of the graphic back if it gets pulled off when weeding. But not scored.

Thanks friends for your replies of advice!

I was asking again from my tests, but also because a few cutter manuals (including mine) advise users to score or "scratch" the front side of the media backing slightly to gauge if knife force is set correctly.

I do realize though that not all of what is suggested in the manual may be best practices.
