I have a guy that wants a dozen of these shirts with more shirts in the future. It is white ink on black shirts. I'm not big on white ink due to its lack of softhand feel. I'll probably have to print at least three times too. If I do screen print it I will probably heat press afterwards. I had to with the last white ink job I did due to the white ink pulling the fibers up on the shirt. Let me know what you think.

I prefer screen printing. If your having trouble printing white there is probably something you could do differently to get better results. Do a search on the forum for printing white on darks. there have been a lot of helpful tips posted. You should never have to heat press your print. If you don't like the heavy hand of an opaque plastisol there is always discharge. The discharge whites I've printed have no feel to them at all after washing.

I would normally agree with you except he only needs 12 shirts done. Why mess around with screen costs, flash, discharge, etc. for this low number?
I guess I just prefer screen printing over vinyl. If I was doing it and I knew I'd have to set it up again soon for re orders, I'd just save the screen. As far as screen costs go I'd still charge our standard screen fee to cover that and setting one screen up takes only a couple minutes so it doesn't seem that bad to me. I only suggested discharge because he said he does not like the heavy hand of white ink. 12 is the absolute minimum I would do though.

what white ink are you using? Steelheader is right you shouldnt have to heat press afterwards. it could be the ink. Some whites have a puff additive that could cause this problem.

I am using multi-choice opaque-white. I thinned it just a bit without affecting the opacity. I had a problem with doing white on maroon shirts in the past. It kept pulling the fibers up on the shirt and looked rather rough. I heat pressed them for 7 seconds at 330 degrees and they turned out fine. I think it also helped with the thickness of the ink as well sice I had to print flash print flash print to completely cover the maroon. I am not familiar with discharge. Can someone enlighten me?

I think it all depends on you and your print ability with white ink. Really the screen set up is quite simple and once its burned you can always print another run. Doing the tees in vinyl is simple as well.
This is a discussion about Should I screen print or vinyl this design? that was posted in the Vinyl Cutters (Plotters) and Transfers section of the forums.
