Hey guys, would buying a cutter without a stand be a bad idea. Trying to save money. What do you think?

When I got my first cutter, I used a table as my stand. I had no issues with the function of the cutter. I recently bought a new cutter and a stand. I like having it on a stand a lot. I feel it is easier to move and position . this allows me more room when I need it. the stand is nice, but not a necessity. .... JB

I've seen some people with em on desks, depends on how long of a run you're expecting I suppose. I have a SP300V printer/cutter and usually jobs are a yard or longer, so it needs the stand (and a takeup roll, as right now I've just got a craftily folded box!).

If you're planning on just doing t-shirts, stickers, etc where your job length is probably just a foot or so then a GX24 or other small sized cutter should work fine sitting on the desk.

I've done cuts well over 15 ft and believe me, you better have it either sitting on a stand or on something that gives you access to allow the vinyl to "flow".

yep - a stand isn't a 'necessity' ..... but it sure is good to have when you're cutting long runs of anything - sign or shirt vinyl! my last "real job" my boss cheaped out and bought the plotter without the stand - and it's a total PITA. i have two here on stands and wouldn't have it any other way - it was worth the few extra bucks!!

This is the opinion I hear most echoed on the forum, word for word just about, so much so that I am convinced to buy the stand at the point of purchase... great post, Jan.
Hope you've been well.

Yep, a stand certainly not a requirement but a good asset to have if you plan on doing longer runs with the vinyl needing room to flow. But rest assured a table will work just as well

Thanks to everyone for helping me on this. I want a stand but was just looking to save a buck. After hearing the comments, I'll work to get the stand.

Depending on the plotter you're looking at, you can always try it without a stand at first and when you realise that you need it, you can buy it.

I personally wouldn't own a plotter without a stand, especially in this tight apartment.

Default Re: Would the stand be needed?

I just got a GX-24 and previously I had a USCutter Laserpoint 24. The Laserpoint had a stand it it worked well for long material. The GX-24 I bought didn't have a stand and I just couldn't bring myself to shell out $250 plus shipping for their stand. So I went to Walmart and bought a heavy duty Rubbermaid shelving unit. It cost $30 and this is what I like about it. It is a 4 shelf unit, but I only installed 3 of the shelves. I positioned the GX-24 on the front edge of the top shelf. This allows the fed vinyl to run down the front just like a stand would. The shelf is still wide enough to use the desktop roll holder that comes with the cutter.

It's not as portable as a stand, but I really don't have a need to move it around. I also have the 2 lower shelved to store vinyl and other supplies on. For me...it's just as functional as the stand and provides storage to boot.

Just a thought for your consideration.

JimmieD

I used a upper kitchen cabinet, ( 36 x 36 x 12) turned it upside down put some wheels on it, and now I can store my vinyl and roll it all into a corner when not in use.
P.S. You can usually get a used cabinet from a cabinet shop that just did a remodel job. Hope this helps.

The shelf idea was good. The cabinet idea was very imaginative. The wheels were indeed a nice touch. Just shows what you can do. I went ahead and ordered a stand with the cutter. Can't wait to get it. Don't know how to use it. But its all mine.
