Question Question about vinyl

Hey people, i think i have just had a smack down to reality and just want to confirm its true. . .

With vinyl you cut your design onto one colour and heat press it onto the t-shirt right?

So with that assumption I guess if you design t-shirts with more than one colour you dont want to use vinyl? or can you inkjet onto vinyl?

sorry if the question sounds a little dumb but i find it hard to understand things sometimes so i gotta ask a lot of simple questions

thanks

You can print on vinyl but not with ink jet, You need to find someone with a large format printer like a Roland. Sign makers usually have them.
You might consider heat transfers. You can print those on an Epson ink jet. Start out in the "Heat Press and Heat Transfers" forum here. Lots of info there. Good luck.

does rolands law apply to heat transfers law? i.e print colour designs and heat press them onto a t-shirt?

If you go with heat transfers, you can use a $100 Epson. We just bought their new No.120 model. Works great. Also, I think heat transfers end up looking better than vinyl as well.

you think? cool thanks lenny - i really am super stuck in decideding what to do!

The thing is im pretty much convinced that i will do heat transfer but for some reason im under this illusion that the t-shirts will look tacky and the transfer will crack and stuff if the t-shirt gets stretched.

im reading stuff on the forums but i just dont get it all the time :O

if they do good quality transfers that look good and not some quick bodge job then for sure i will go down that way

For the most part Vinyl is flat in color. You could do a 3 color job with vinyl, but it takes time to cut, weed and apply and it can get thick and heavy. The Roland machine can print and cut on vinyl, which is really an opaque transfer.

thanks promethues - i think im understanding more about vinyal now and its really only good for one colour jobs right?

i checked out the Roland machine and indeed it seems to be an awesome piece of machinery - but its really expensive - it was like 6,500GBP which is like $14,000 :O and unfortunatley thats way out of my price range

its like i said - i have this weird phobia about heat transfers for some reason and i dont know why! its because i just want the final outcome to look good - but im doing my research now so hopefully i will come up with something

I personally like vinyl and plastisol transfers. The method you use really depends on what art you create and how much product you intend on printing.

The skull as mentioned is a stock plastisol transfer printed by ART BRANDS. Plastisol transfers are screen printed transfers that you heatpress on apparel.
