Default White text with a black border

Hi all,

I'm trying to cut some text in black vinyl, with a white border. I tried duplicating the text and making the border slightly larger for the white layer (1st layer) , but for some reason the software isn't recognizing the thicker border. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

What software are you using? You should just either make an outline or in corel draw it's called contour.

Hi David, You mentioned Corel Draw. Do you know how to do this in Illustrator.

Thanks

Unhappy Re: White text with a black border

Sorry, I'm using sign blazer cutting software and corel draw x3. I know how to do the outline in corel, but when I import into the software it doesn't notice the added thickness of the border.

I'm not sure if I am making much sense

Hey Newguy. I too have sign blazer. How's it working for you. I've only had it 2 months and I think the little "bugs" in the system just might be operator error.

If it is a line, and all you are doing is setting it thicker, that won't work. The software reads only the line and cuts that. What you would need to do is offset the line.

Try making a contour for the text to your desired thickness and then break apart contour group so the text and the contour becomes 2 separate objects.

What you'll probably want to use is the Contour tool in CorelDRAW.

Select your text, go to Effects -> Contour and a little window pops up with the Contour controls. Set your offset width, leave steps at 1, make sure it's set to Outside, and hit Apply.

Then go to Arrange -> Break Contour Group Apart.

You can then export to SignBlazer.

Another way that you could do it is a little more involved, but it gives you better control over how your outline will look (rounded corners, miter limit, etc) is to use your Outline Tool as you have been, make the outline larger (do not dupplicate your object...use the same text for this). Then go to Arrange -> Convert Outline to Object, and then make sure you have only your new outline object selected, break that apart, and delete all of your inner curves (leaving any holes for letters with holes). Just make sure you have the correct curves deleted, and then select all of those new objects again and hit Combine. You should then have only your original text and your new "outline" that you will be able to cut and lay your text on top of.

If you need further explanation, please let me know.

Okay, just figured out an easier way with the second method...YES, duplicate your original text...create a thicker outline, go to Arrange -> Convert Outline to Object. With your outline tool, make your corners the way you want them, then select your duplicated text and your new outline object, and Weld them together. Duh...I should have known that from the start.
