Default Plotter and Material

Is there a material that can be cut on a plotter that can be used as a masking for airbrushing very small lines or letters? Will it leave a residue when removed? This is for a hobby of 1/8 scale vehicles so if there is such a material and a plotter that will do it, what would the smallest allowable line and/or letter be that could be cut? Is there a good quality plotter out there for less that $600.00 that would do the job? It doesn’t have to be more than a 12” width. I use Corel Draw so it would need to be compatible with that or at least be able to import the file. Which one should I go with Copam CP-2500, Craft Robo Pro, Stika 8” ? Thanks for your help.

Standard paint mask should do the job. The glue removes easy and clean.

I hate to say this but...............why not just buy one of the craft plotters like a P Cut. They are small and would work if that is all you want it for. Also, MacTac has a low tack vinyl that works good for airbrushing. And speaking of airbrushing.......check out the new Badger Renegade, it's gonna kick some airbrush butt!!!!

I use a stika 15, and it works nicely. For simple stuff like that, I don't think you could go wrong with either a Stika or a CraftRobo.

How is the Stika at cutting really fine designs? I believe that model has stepper motors while the CR Pro has servo motors.

From what little I've cut on it, it has done great. I've cut some small text without any problem. The only thing I have seen bad with it, is it is noisy. Also I don't think it can cut thick material.

Thanks for the answers. I am leaning towards a Craft Robo Pro because it automaticaly aligns the work. Before I break loose with any money I still have to know or see it's ability to cut very small text 1/4" at the very minimum. There is not a company around here that sells them so I can't see first hand if it can.

It will easily cut 1/4" text. Well, most fonts, anyway.

Hammered hit the nail on the head with paint mask and a plotter. For hand cuttiing, frisket is what I have used in the past. If you are doing airbrush of any size get at least a 24" plotter. Most plotters will cut .25" characters...weeding those cuts is another story altogether.

I see there are many different brands of Frisket. Any particular brand that will give me the cleanest lines? 100's of hours are put into just one model and it is very important for sharp clean lines. It sounds as though you all have this process down pretty good. I am excited about seeing how this new way of painting turns out. Does any one have a picture of any kind of model with pin stripping, graphics, or lettering that they did by using masking tape cut on a plotter they could post?

I did screen printing T's years ago and really enjoyed it. The "I want something for nothing, along with I want it yesterday" got to me so I gave it up. My questions relate to painting 1/8 scale scratch built model horse drawn vehicles as a hobby.

I found a Craft Robo Pro 1 1/2 old and bought it. Cheryl at PHOTO JEWELRY, PET TAGS, ROLAND distributor of the STIKA and METAZA metal printer machines, Personalized Tshirts, Craft Robo & Klic N Kut machines, Scrapbook kits, Gsd files, Decals was real helpful and assured me that it would be a good machine for me. What I have read is that the newer models are white and made in China vs Japan, other than that no real differance. Oh, and the cost. I will let you all know how it works out. Thanks to all that replied to my questions.

I did find out that it will cut fonts down to 5 mm, we will see how well.
