To try to clarify what I am asking, if I have a roll of vinyl that is 20 inches wide and I cut a 9 inch long piece from the roll, can I feed the 9 inch "roll edge" of the vinyl into a vinyl cutter, or is there a grain to the vinyl that will not allow me to do this. I ask because I had a problem with inkjet heat transfers in the past where my supplier only had 11 x 17 sheets when I can only print 8.5 x 11. I was in desparate need of paper, so took the 11 x 17 and cut it in half. Feeding the paper was difficult at best because of the paper grain. Does this grain problem apply to vinyl?

Nope, you will be fine by doing that.

Your cutter may have pinch rollers to grip the sheet. Make sure you don't cut the strip so small that the cutter can't grab both edges of the vinyl.
