Default Anyone dealt with this International Distributor? ..Scam?

Hi there!

I almost have enough money saved up to purchase a Graphtec CE5000-120 cutter to have it shipped internationally to my Australian address. The hard part is finding a distributor who ships here let alone for a reasonable price.

Has anybody here done or know of someone who has done business with SID?

Signs International Distributor

The reason I’m posting this is because I have two concerns..

1. The little amount of information I found googling this company

2. The obvious being their “sale policy” which indeed first impression, looked to be a blatant scam. (read highlighted section in email below)

I emailed them this question a few days ago:
Quote:
Hi there! I live in NSW, Australia and want to purchase a CE5000-120 cutter. I do understand that warranty for this item will be void if you sell internationally. Would you accept $3000US including shipping to my address (town near Sydney) I do have contacts who would also like to purchase this model cutter as well. Please contact me by the email provided.
Their reply:
Quote:

Thanks for your interest regarding the purchase of Graphtec Equipment from SID Signs. We are able to sell the specific model you are looking for, at the at the price range you are interested into. Our sale policy is the following; we will send to you a credit card form, which you will need to fill out along with a photo ID picture matching the name on the card. We will than ship the equipment to your desired address in Australia. Please let us know if there is anything we could do to assist you into doing the transaction; don’t hesitate to write to us or contact us by phone if you have any question or concern. We look forward hearing from you soon.

The only payment method I will be using is PayPal (unless someone can recommend a respected distributer thats deals otherwise.) I plan on telling them this in my next email if indeed they are a legitimate business. It's becoming a desperate struggle to find anyone that deals with Australia when it comes to this specific cutter or any of the CE5000 or FC7000 for that matter. Your wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Glen

Why don't you contact Graphtec and ask them to refer you to a dealer that serves Austrailia?

There's only one dealer (Anitech) and they quoted $6250AUD without shipping costs. Costs double if bought locally. Sorry should of made that clear. Prefer to save my pennies

Well if you go for price alone then you always take a risk of loosing in other ways. As far as the Credit Card Form goes it is becoming more of a requirement lately. I had to fill one out in order to buy shirts. Unfortunately once the company ships the merchandise if the credit card is bad then they have lost the merchandise so they are just trying to cover their butt. You could call Graphtec and check to make sure they are a reputable distributor and see if anyone has had a problem with them. If Graphtec has never heard of them you can go elsewhere but I wouldn't let the form be a big concern, I think they will become commonplace very soon

I have no experience with the company and have no opinion on their legitimacy one way or the other. But, asking for a copy of photo id along with a credit card on large potentially fraudulent transactions is not an unusual practice. Your attitude would set off the "scam meter" in my head before their request for id would.

Exactly mate. So far noone has claimed doing business with them so I have every right to be skeptical. Theres nothing much about them anywhere which says little for a company with such a title.

It can appear both ways like you said, so taking precautionary measures like this, has helped me decide what Ill do next. As for dealing outside of eBay with not well known companies, my attitude remains the same, don't trust the internet

Great idea, I'll do exactly that. Ill report back about them shortly. Thanks allot.

While that's not at all indicative either (there's plenty of legitimate businesses the people who happened to read this thread won't have dealt with) I wouldn't want to risk doing business with a company I couldn't find anything out about either. Going from the e-mail you quoted, I wouldn't get caught up in any of that though; it's the whether or not you can get an independent recommendation (or warning) that matters. Hopefully you can get that sorted through Graphtec - good luck.

SID is an unauthorized distributor according to the Graphtec website. I also called Graphtec customer support who said they were "unheard of." Graphtec do not recommend anyone buying from this dealer, especially when the SID "about us" section of their website states:-

Quote:
SIDsigns have joined partnership with other major brands like Avery, Onesign, Magtech, Graphtec, EZ Plastix, EXpox,to develop new materials and reach the need , and to satisfy the expectation of a fast pace market.
They did assure me that the Graphtec site has many authorized dealers which deal internationally from the US. They couldn’t tell me off hand which ones, so I will continue explore every avenue.

Cheers guys
