I am really new to this whole vinyl thing. I am looking at doing some vinyl decals for cars. I only want to do something no bigger than 8 by 12. I am looking into doing call signs for ham radio operators or team logos for local teams. I own a heat press and maybe want to get into shirts with vinyl. I know nothing when it comes to vinyl. Anyone suggestions on what I can do or if I am in the right place?

Hello, where are you located? Flowerbox gave you great advice a 24 inch cutter will serve you well. Good luck ..... JB
I agree, go with the 24" plotter, you will want that size as a minimum when you get into tteam logos and such.
Remember that you will lose an inch on the material because of the rollers when cutting also, and most shirt designs will end up being 10 - 11 inches wide for adults.

Great advice on the 24" cutter.....
You may also want to look at the type of T-Shirt vinyl you are going to use. a few great choices are ThermoFlex, Spectra Cut II, and Multicut. All three are thin and look & feel great on the shirt. There are tons of others out there depending on what you want to do but these are just a few suggestions. Search this forum for these vinyl names and you will get alot of feedback on them.
You're in the right place and my advice is get at least a 24 inch plotter. You WILL do bigger graphics then 12 inches.
Not necessarily true. I have a 15" (robopro II) and the width has been more than adequate. The only real problem I've had is that a lot of vinyl rolls come in 19" widths. I either have to trim the whole roll (and lose a lot of material) or cut 15" sheets out of it. It's more of a minor annoyance than anything else.
If I was doing full time I would absolutely invest in a 24" cutter.

If you are finding vinyl in 19" widths then you must only be doing t-shirts. Sign vinyl comes in 15" then goes up to 24" from every place I have ever seen.
If you are doing strictly t-shirts then I would go with thermoflex plus as it is standard 15" width.

Vinyl rolls do come in other sizes and some dist. cut them for size. If you go on e-bay you sometimes will see all different sizes.

I see this all the time and it drives me NUTS. I'm not trying to pick on you flowerboxx, I swear. You should choose the material based on the application, not the brand or whether it comes in a particular roll size.
I was just pointing out that a 15" cutter is just fine for normal use (for me).
Hi, I gotta tell you that I am glad I got a 24" cutter, I was just going to do shirts and car decals, as it turns out, I do custom cutting for a few folks I know that have stuff I can gang up and cut a ton of stuff at once, that alone has paid for my cutter. Sooo bigger the better.

I just bought some 30 inch from wellington House for my signs.. and that thing I sell.. because I need 24 inch cuts.. With my cutter, a JSI 33 inch wide I found that if I cut my design long ways the cut comes out about an 1/8 of an inch longer. can't have that when you are doing inch markers.. I don't know if the better brands like a roland would do this.

Oh I don't see you picking on me, I am simply stating facts. Sign vinyl comes standard (big distributors) in 15" 24" 30". T-shirt vinyl comes in 15" (thermoflex plus, spectra cut) and 19"-20" (spectra cut II, multi cut, cad-cut). That's all I was pointing out, It really doesn't matter to me what you use I was just trying to help you from having to cut it down.
I wasn't meaning it stopped at 24" in width I was saying that the standard sizes go from 15" then next size is 24". Sorry for starting anything, I was just pointing out to the original poster.
