Thermal tape can be used to hold a transfer in place while pressing. I use it for tight registration of second color vinyl application.
Thermal tape is made to handle the heat from the press. If you used 'normal' tape, you would have issues with the melting tape glue, melting plastic or scorching paper. It would smell nice too!
