Default Thinking about getting into the T-shirt business

I have a basement business cutting vinyl signs. I am thinking about expanding into the t-shirt business using my cutter, thermoflex or polyflex and a heat press. I'm thinking that if I can get the local school and sports business, I can at least break even with it. But making a profit would be better. So I guess my question is this: Can I make it doing a basement business (working out of my house?) Is anyone else out there doing this? and how is it working out? Can I do well enough with just the heat press or do I need to get in to screen printing?
I am open to all the advice I can get!

Welcome to the forums, Karlyn. I think it's a good idea to get into t-shirts as well since you already have a cutter, and of course, you already have a good background on softwares and designs. It will depend on your marketing strategy if you'll break even or get good profits. But at least, you can try to enjoy it.

I am doing this and it is working out fine. You'll want to also look at some transfer/imprint suppliers. The best 2 imho are www.transferexpress.com Their workbook and their $49 start-up package is great. They are easy to work with when you want to use their designs. The other one, and I really like these people for working with your own desings!!, is Howard Sportswear Graphics They are quick and very reasonable when you submit your own artwork.

Getting involved with the schools and the different teams is profitable. I started as a home-based embroidery and added a heat press. Now, 75% of my business is 1-color heatpress stuff. I'm looking to add a versacamm to add reasonabley priced color imprints. I love the look of embroidery, but heatpress is paying the bills. PLUS, it is a great time to go to the school and/or games and see just how many people are wearing stuff purchased from you . It's not 100% yet here, but I'm on the hunt for it.

Contact me if you have any questions.

I use Ace Transfer Company. They are great people and their product is in my opinion far superior to Transfer express. I have customers that tell me they like the feel of the stuff from Ace over Transfer Express. Good luck and best wishes. .... JB
