Talking Stepper Style Motor

Hi all ... I am still looking for the "perfect" Mac compatible plotter. I don't understand what a stepper-style motor is. Can anyone explain to me why the stepper motor would not be something I am interested in purchasing?

I was told this by a salesman after I explained that I am a graphic/web designer. He said I would not be happy with a stepper style because it will not cut a full circles or be able to cut my designs very well. What is the other kind of motor available? Thanks for any help!

Servo motor is a better motor. Faster (about 5x), quieter, and more accurate around curves. With a stepper motor, the motor is more or less taking steps to make a curve, charting from point to point. You will see minor blemishes when cutting curves.

Thanks Josh for the quick response. That clears things up for me. I see you are from Pittsburgh ... me too! Do you work for Imprintables Warehouse? Do you have any refurb or used vinyl cutters that are USB and come with mac compatible software or Illustrator bridge? I have been to the website but don't really know what I'm looking for. Basically I want a 24" cutter that will get me started in vinyl and hold up for years to come, and capable of cutting complex graphics if needed. Thanks for any help!

Give Josh a call at 800-347-0068 and he can fix you up.

I'm using a Roland GX-24 (from Josh) with my Mac and Illustrator CS plug in. (I'm waiting for CS3!)

Works great. Ask any questions you have, I'd be happy to help you get started.

Thanks so much. I'm hoping to get a 24" Roland as well. I'm just trying to scrounge up the funds since I am just starting out. It seems like with a cutter people make their money back fairly quickly. I've been a designer for about 15 years now so I'm hoping the sign-making, t-shirt making comes easily for me. I just don't really like the look of transfers for my shirts. Thanks for the offer ... I will be taking you up on it when I get one!

If you are comfortable with vectors, you'll do fine. As with all new ventures, there are 'educational moments', but it's not that hard.

I made more money on one outdoor vinyl job than 2 months of t-shirts.
