Default How SMALL or THIN can you go with vinyl designs.

Ok it may sound like a strange question.

I am looking at a new design direction with the heat pressed vinyl on tees. Some of those potential designs will have design elements that will typically be lines that can be as thin as 2mm (1/16th inch) and blocks as small as 3mm (1/8th inch). These would be pressed onto Gildan 5000 series tees.

Does anyone have direct experience of such small detail design elements with heat pressed vinyl on tees? The main question that obviously springs to mind is; will there be sufficent surface area on the vinyl to give good adhesion to the garment?

I know I can try it out with test washes, but I am thinking of the durability of the design over an extended time period.

Any help, advice, guidance, suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as this is a whole new area of tee design for me.

I would say you would have no problem with that size on a heat transfer vinyl, because it has a sticky backing. Those would probably give you some troubles if your were trying to do them on a sign vinyl.

Those are very small lines and objects and I would tend to stay away from that as well as fine pointed edges. I have used some thin fonts that held up but not that thin. I use thermoflex plus. Another factor might be the density and weave of the fabric you press on.

Im 99% it will hold up just fine if the garment doesnt have a wide weave. However weeding it might be a little hard

I've done that kind of size in flock with no problems but not vinyl. I stay away from fine detail as it takes longer to weed and there is a chance you will pull it off the backing paper.

I have no problem with the weeding aspect, as they are purely for my own retail designs, rather than doing 100 off for a client.

I currently offer full colour designs, but that is limited to white and very light pastels due to the processes uses. As most folks already know, black is the biggest selling colour tee by a very wide margin.

Two processes available to cater for that market (at a sensible price) are heat pressed vinyl and better quality transfers. My cutter has an optical capability so print and cut is certainly a viable proposition, but heat pressed vinyl apart from having excellent durability, also has vivid visual impact. The finer detailing is to enhance that visual impact even further.
