Adwords are brilliant if you target them, the tighter the better. tshirts as a keyword will cost you an arm and a leg but 'tshirts Swindon' will be more cost effective.
Google has a lot of good advice on it's help pages.

It can definitely be worth it to advertising using Google Adwords.

It's not just as easy as "pick keywords, bid and wait for sales" though.

It takes a lot of research, planning, budget watching, tests and retests to really make it work for you. They give you lots of tools to and help pages to read so you can learn.

I think where people sometimes get in trouble is that they think they just want to be the top for a specific keyword, they bid a lot of money per click and just wait for the sales to roll in.

When in reality, you need to test your ad text, your landing page, your bid price, your ad location and more to find out which gives you the best return for your investment.

The nice thing about Google is that you can try something and if it doesn't work - you can monitor it and change it until you find something that does. You can measure the effectiveness of keywords, ads & placements. That's miles better than the old print adverts which are basically fire-&-forget.

at that time, there were not much competition either. so it might be working during that period(of time), but now market is really complicated(to understand) & if you just guessed few things without actual thought, you can easily waste 1K/day or even more.
