[SELLING PRINTING SERVICES] Entering a contract agreement with a store owner
Hi Guys!
Lately i have been thinking of walking up to the shop owner of one of my favourite clothing stores to propose to him of a business arrangement were by he can display my t-shirts in his store and if customers buy my t-shirt from his shop, he will get a percentage per sale on each tee sold from his shop. Guys! I want your advice on how best to go about this, and how best to protect my interest and his in the most formal way possible.
Am also considering making advertisment flyers were by the flyer will contain the words AVAILABLE AT ..(HIS SHOP NAME)
I REALLY NEED YOUR HELP.
Re: Entering a contract agreement with a store owner
Why don't you try wholesaling the shirts to him first? It's an arrangement he is most familiar with.
If that doesn't work, I see nothing wrong with a consignment arrangement to get goods sold. If you really want to do it right, and have the capital, bringing in your own display works well too.
Re: Entering a contract agreement with a store owner
I also recommend a wholesale agreement. I'm working on setting up a couple wholesale agreements in my city. I currently have some shirts on consignment at two local shops (one is a vintage/indie clothing store, the other is an underground music/record shop). Consignment can really cut into your profits, meaning you're not going to make nearly as much and/or you're going to have to bump up your shirt prices to compensate for the consignment fee, which makes your product less appealing because the price is inflated. Currently, I'm in 30% consignment fee agreements at both shops--these are standard rates for both of them.
I'm looking to start wholesale producing for the local skate shops and pull my product from the consignment stores. However, I'm searching the forum for advice on how to arrange the wholesale agreement. I could use help with this part... I've been working on product proposals, but I need to figure out some details of how to approach starting the wholesale contract and what I should be expecting for return on the wholesale purchase.
I'm with everyone else- wholesale. I would make a list of stores that you would like for your product to be carried in and work your way down it on the wholesale approach. If at the end of the list you feel that you need to be in more stores then you can go back through it and propose consignment to the stores that said no to wholesaling.
Even then, I'd make a new list of shops and keep pushing for wholesale. There's a million and one reasons to avoid consignment.
DO NOT just waltz up to the owner (or who you presume to be the owner...) and start talking business. You need to be respectful of the person's time and job duties. It would be rude to begin with but also unfair to put him/her/them is such a position unprepared. Call and/or email your interests and set up an in person meeting from there.
Re: Entering a contract agreement with a store owner
As everyone has previously stated, go for wholesale. Consignment is definitely a great way to start up and get your brand known to the local populations but your really at a loss when you do this. First of all, the store owner is really not under any obligation to sell your clothes and would much rather sell their own inventory that they have sitting in the back room. As for him displaying your shirts in the front window...the only way one would agree to this is if your product really is something they desire because it could reflect poorly on the store being in the front window, aka the first thing any wanderers will see and be grabbed by to come into the store ( that is not to say your designs are not adequate as I haven't seen them :P). Following that logic I feel like if the store owner did like your clothes enough to do that they will be willing to buy wholesale.
