Discuss the fun task of marketing a t-shirt shop. Where to advertise, link building, word of mouth, press releases, search engine marketing, keyword advertising, magazines, etc.
Is it possible to host your own website? I noticed about two and a half weeks ago or something like that when tshirtforums.com went down i read Rodneys post saying his server went down and he wanted to set up some type of alarm to notify him when such problems occur (Rodney do you host your own site?)
Most people who host their own site have their own server in a co-location facility; expensive but entirely easy to get setup. Technically you can host your own site from home, but it would be against most ISP's user agreements, and not have sufficient bandwidth.

When I say "my server", I mean my "dedicated server that I lease from a datacenter". I don't have the server in my house or anything (for many reasons that were pointed out in this thread: What About A Home Server Host Your Own Stuff?? )
With a dedicated server, you can access it remotely and do just about anything you could do if you had it right next to you.
There are tons of dedicated server hosts out there, but unless you are running a high traffic site or are offering web hosting (or you have a lot of sites yourself), it's not really worth the extra expense.
A regular hosting account through places like lunarpages, hostgator, etc are more than most t-shirt businesses need and cost much less (less than $200 per year instead of over $200+ per month)
it is possible but not really worth it... most isps or service providers won't allow you to run a server from your home... because of bandwidth... that's changing a bit with fios and cable with the increased speed... you can get cheap hosting that will do all you need with email addresses/storage/data base capability etc... I used godaddy and it was 10 bucks a month...and i had no issues... good luck
I've been using now for several years my own server, at home, with no problems.
First, it was just for friends and family, so it was a personal web site.
I used a dedicated server, running Linux. and it is set it and forget it in a closet at home.
So if business allows it and traffic demands it I will move it to a commercial web hosting.
Way to much trouble. Get a professional web hosting service its so much easier and safer. I would not recommend trying to host yourself unless this your profession and you happen to be in the t shirt business too.
