Default What should be included in a wholesale apparel brochure?

I have called several shops in my area trying to get my t-shirts in there, but they keep asking for a brochure or catalog. What kind of information do I need to put in a piece like that ?

I was going to include contact info, shirt pictures, fabric info, company info, and web address. Anything else?

yes, pricing. Do you offer quantity pricing.. 12, 24, 36 etc. also terms. I give some customers 30 days (large volume) Others I collect payment up front with Credit card. return policy? This not my tee customers but my distributor pricing on my TSI or in your case store pricing.

Mmmm, pricing that's probably key! Were still trying to figure all of that out so maybe we'll do a short run so we can adjust it later. Thanks!!!!

I've been giving this subject some thought, which leads me to this question. Let's say that your producing a small line of fashion tees with shirts retailing at $24.95 and 49.95; How much profit does the retailer need/expect when he or she sells the shirt?

Are you selling at that price or are you thinking that is what the price should be. Your price to retailers should be what your cost is plus profit. The retail price is determined by the retailer not you. You can say Suggested, but that is about it. If It cost you $5.00 to produce a shirt then your wholesale price may be $8.- $10 depending on the volume sold. Then the retailer may price up from$16. $20. If high end store then maybe higher. You guys out there that are trying to brand your shirts have a ton of competition. Unless you have been to shows like Magic in Vegas or Gift shows that have companies selling branded shirts you have no idea of what to do. The off shore shirt makers will eat you alive in pricing and the quality is way up there. If you don't believe me visit the stores that sell the shirts by the thousands like Target, sears, etc. and look at the labels.. Rare to find USA made shirt. It is a tough game. I play poker.. and would love to sit at a WSOP event.. 8000 players.. $10,000 each... 800 players in the money.. the rest lose $10,000. That the game you face.. If you are lucky enough to get into one of those stores are even a small boutique you would still maybe be one of those 800 out of 8000. Having the idea and having it printed is only part of the game.. Marketing and selling is a whole other game.. but one you need to know. badalou

Thanks for the input, Lou. We have only begun to research the retail and wholesale pricing of product. I used to manufacture products for another market, and we followed the two-and-a-half rule. We always wanted to be selling our product for 2 1/2 times our hard cost. That rule needs serious adjustment in this venue. The retail prices that I threw out in my question to you were MSRP. Of course, retailers can do what they want. Retail equalling twice wholesale checks out, not factoring in quantity discounts.

Thanks for the advice and the warnings. Launching an independent apparel line is fraught with danger. Most jump in with little or no business experience and even less funding. I liked your poker analogy. We live and work in Las Vegas, and we use it all the time around here. My business partner and I own an advertising agency, so it's difficult for us to hide from the realities of what we are doing. It's my job to convince clients to dedicate large sums of money to marketing to establish the best chance of success for their brands. Sometimes, they do what you suggest, and sometimes you can't tell them anything. We often tell them that you don't just luck out and gain marketshare; it purchase it. We're taking a measured risk, and I look forward to seeing how it plays out.

The marketing effort is bigger than anything we've done for one of our own businesses in the past. We're planning on Pool (part of Magic). It's a good place to start interacting with actual buyers and people who are experienced but still passionate enough to not have left the fashion industry yet. We're direct mail practitioners, so we're do the traditional stuff and add some social media, our own retail sites, Amazon, web ads, etc. just to get things started with the boutique retailers and some direct-to-consumer sales. We have some other B2B ideas in the works, but it's early to discuss them now. I'm turning 40 in a few months, and my wife and I are raising four children. I think that means that I'm learning patience, and we'll give the plan time to work. I look forward to reporting whether I knew "when to hold 'em."

Thanks again,
