Basically i've a Cafepress store which has a single page with sections into which the products go.How deep into this does Googlebot crawl?
Does the Google monster just take the text & imagery from the "intro top image" or does look at all descriptions etc within the sections?
Also,when Google last crawled my site it took a snapshot of the "about me" section where there was little text (since added some text in case the beasty looks in there again) & no images and as a result hits from searches has fallen off.
Any reason why the Google monster should do this since prior to this date it's crawled the images & "top page" ?
Google usually crawls all the pages in a site as long as there are links to it on other pages of the site.

What do you mean by a "snapshot"?
It should crawl all the pages, including the about me. If the page changes, then it will probably recrawl it at some point in the future.
"Snapshot" as per Google's "cached" results of the page "spidered" by the Google beastie.
On that section of the page i had very few keywords and no relevant images, hence none of the keywords or key phrases which previously produced decent rankings for the site , now do not register in searches for these words/phrases.

They may have taken "snapshots" of many pages on your site.

They probably spidered your whole site, however different pages will show up for different searches.
