Question trying to get started with plastisol transfers (getting samples?)

Ok, so I want to try my hand at pressing plastisol transfers.

I contacted a few custom transfer companies yesterday, and I'll probably contact a few more today.

Yesterday, I emailed:

dowlinggraphics.com
first-edition.com
versatranz.com

I already got a bounced/returned email message from info@ first-edition and versatranz.com. I even used the versatranz.com online contact form.

So far, it's not looking good

Does anybody have experience with a custom transfer company that can do the whole order process online? Upload the graphic, proof the design, view the pricing sheet, pay for the order?

I've read about the "sample" pack in the forums. Should I be asking for one of those from each printer, and it is something I need to buy, or do they give it out to prospective customers? Does it have actual sample transfers that I can press?

I did business with Janet at First Ed. initially with a phone call. Everything else we did in my order was via e-mail.

Here's my experience doing the same:

versatranz - filled out the online sample request form 2 weeks ago, never heard anything or received anything from them
first-edition - got that same email notice as Rodney, so had to call them. They didn't ask any questions just the address. The only thing I didn't like is that they sent it UPS ground which requires signature upon delivery. If I had known that I'd given them my office address, instead now I have to make the time to pick it up at the counter.
howards - I emailed them requesting a pack, but they asked me to call them back to find out my specific needs and to take down my info.
Dowling - same thing with Dowling. So ROdney you might have to spend a couple of mins on the phone after all.
tranfer express - again, phone call. So far these guys are my pick, transfers came out great and I only tried 2. They sent lots and lots of samples. I still do look forward to trying first edition though because of all the good reviews I've read here.

I didn't ask these companies for anything specific, just told them I wanted to try out every different type of transfer they offered so I could chose. And neither company mentioned anything about paying for any of the stuff, not even shipping.

I never have to sign for UPS ground shipments.

Wow I asked Janet (On The phone ) for samples and a binder (filled with samples) and she shipped them. All my orders have been with emails. Maybe you need to tell her I sent you, LOL.. The binder is filled with a variety of types of samples.

Interesting...I wonder if they block emails from new customers until they make a phone call

Thanks for the breakdown Annushka, that really helps to know what to expect!

I think someone else mentioned transfer express, so I'll give them a try today as well.

I'll probably have to pick up that phone thing and call First Edition, they've been getting such good reviews, they must be worth the phone call

I don't know if it's appropriate to name companies, but I am switching from my local silkscreeners (Yucatan, Mexico) to the heat transfer method of printing my shirts. After some online searching, I ordered thru berda.com, whose service is excellent and their one color transfers work very well. They will walk you through the whole thing via internet. I ordered cold-peel transfers for my 100% cotton tshirts.

They worked great except on stretchy women's blouses. Another internet search took me to http://www.tdott.com/ where they have been most helpful, going as far as sending me my first sample order to my hotel in Long Beach where I was attending the ISS... BEFORE I had even paid for it! These transfers, hot peel, 4 second wonders, work very well on those pesky stretchy materials.

Highly recommend both of these companies.

Hope it helps.

R

You will send money to Lou, you will send money to Lou . OK as I was writing this I called Janet..
OK I told Janet that there seems to be a breakdown on the emails. They have a new email process that may be filtering out emails. She asked me to tell you all to email her directly.
[email address] remember that you need to place the hyphen between first and edition.
Rodney, she is expecting your call. 1-800-872-6760
I told her that if I am going to recommend some one they have to supply great service. Lou

Yes, tdott.com is the same as spot98.net (listed in the thread I linked to above). Lucy (t-bot) from our forums works for them as well, but they are in Canada, which is a bit too far for me when considering ordering custom transfers. Although, with most of the transfer printers being on the east coast, it might end up being the same amount of time.

Thanks for sharing your experience with both companies! I was at the Long Beach ISS show as well

Rodney, I would contact Spot98, Lucy and the gang always come correct and work with their clients, I'm sure they can help you regardless of location, great stuff, good prices.

I was using silk screen untill I can here and found them... now I swear by plastisol, I have been converted!

hoodie coming for you soon, I didn't forget, just super busy!

Some of my new videos were done for Spot98 (Lucy's company) showing 3 of their transfers.

I never had any responses to initial e-mails to any of the well know custom houses regarding custom transfers. I did get e-mail responses from the well known stock transfer houses.

Janet was quite easy to work with at First Edition. The time factor is really the only killer. I wish we could find someone local that doesnt want to rip your head off in price.
