I haven't actually made anything yet with vinyl or transfers. I'm not sure what kind of vinyl (shiny is all I know) came with the Roland for the test cuttings; it just says "test-use material" and it also came with a sheet of "transparent tape". So, am I to assume that all vinyls come with the backing? And...if I use an opaque transfer printed from my Epson 4800 and then cut out the white from the transfer, do I use this tape for placing letters? And, if I do...does this tape go under the heat press?

This sounds complicated when I write it. If you guys are not as new to this as I am, maybe it will make sense.
Thanks!

If anyone else has info on this, when transferring cut letters/words, please chime in.

Cynthia, your letters/words should look something like this (on the plastic clear sheet that comes attached to the material rolls) after you weed out what you dont want as mentioned, then apply it. No need to use any positioning helper tape because the clear sheet it self sticks...for easy positioning. ...give it a try.

You have the wrong stuff. You can not do this with normal calendar or cast vinyl, you need special textile stuff. Flex and flock are popular words for it.

This stuff: Vinyl Cutters, heat presses, heat transfer material, transfer papers and heat printing supplies all at affordable prices.

yes

yes

but, for making letters, it is best to use the vinyl or other material types that come in a roll OR sheet. A lot easier to apply.

tape is used (i have never used, never had the need for it) to hold down intricate designs on slippery fabrics for example. But, a lot of the time, by gently placing a teflon sheet over the entire thing, it holds it dow OK.

Well everyone thanks for the information. However, when practicing on the CutStudio program for outlining an imported photo (an example: a photograph and wanting to just cut the outline of a person w/o the background) I cannot do it. Is this something that cannot be done on Roland cutter? What I am trying to achieve is to print out an opaque Tshirt transfers and cutting away the white from the photograph... At this rate I will never get a t-shirt transfer made this way...Gee...I have so many questions/problems...guess I'll go take a couple of asprin and "chill"....

Here's a video that kind of explains how to do it in cutstudio here:

I tried looking at that before, but had a hard time with it, too; when it finally did work there was no sound...I have seen other videos that cut out a simple shape, but I want to outline something in Corel and then import to CutStudio; I get a lot of extra lines on the preview. I just want a good clean line cut. Any suggestions??

I have no idea. It's just a youtube video

There is no sound with the video. It just shows you step by step how to cut an outline in cutstudio.

You don't need sound to see the steps and which buttons to click

The link that says "Click here to download it" isn't actually a download link, so if you're trying to right click it and save it from the link it won't work.

The version above is one I made that just focuses on the cutstudio portion of outlining and trimming around an image. That's the one that has no sound.

The one that Josh made with sound is here: Video Tutorial: Cutting Opaque Transfers with a Vinyl Cutter

great thread. im still in my reading/learning stage and have a couple questions.

1) when doing 1 color, you make your design in the software, put in the SAME color vinyl that you want your design to be, and tell the software to cut that design and the roland does it, correct?

2) when doing 2 or more colors, make your design, print it (what do you print it on? ) then take your printed design and put it in the cutter. sound right?

3) if above is correct how does the cutter know where to cut?

thanks alot

kert
