[VINYL TRANSFERS] - Making my first custom t-shirt with cut vinyl, a vinyl cutter and a heat press
Re: Making my first custom t-shirt with cut vinyl, a vinyl cutter and a heat press
i dont mean to sound like a forum's broken record, im just trying to weed through all the posts replies
i've bought a 16X20 hotronix, and i am working with american apparel only.
i get most of my transfers from bang-on in canada, but i want to start making my own, 1-2 color with vinyl. I would like a high-quality plotter/cutter, but not so much as high commercial quality. I just want to make a simple graphic on corel or illustrator, and then have it plotted, then pressed
any high-quality/low-quality vinyl? i guess the vinyl always comes with that backing that the plotter won't cut through? so i dont have to use a teflon sheet with vinyl?
i need an all of the above kind of answer.. but i plan on making a how-to once i've got it all figured out.
Re: Making my first custom t-shirt with cut vinyl, a vinyl cutter and a heat press
If you're looking for a cheaper high-quality plotter, take a look at the USCutter Compam 2500.
For vinyl, if you talk to five people you'll get five different answers, but the ones that are mentioned a lot are ThermoFlex Plus, Siser EasyWeed, and MultiCut from Joto Paper in Canada.
It's still a good idea to have a teflon sheet, especially if you're doing multiple colors. But even for single-color designs it's helpful to have a teflon shee to do a second press after you peel your backer.
Welcome!

I agree with Chani . Each person asked will give you adifferent answer.I use hotmark 70 for most of my apparel vinyl needs. I've had great success with it. I think you should get some samples and compare for yourself. Just because someone else likes it, doesn't mean you will. I wish you good luck and happy experimenting. .....JB

Re: Making my first custom t-shirt with cut vinyl, a vinyl cutter and a heat press
thanks to both of you-- you're certainly right, i will have to go through some to see how i like it. after spending $200 for about 60 pieces @ bangon, i think i will certainly be motivated to start cutting my own vinyl.
this is all for personal use, i am just so tired of having to feel bad after shopping and not finding exactly what i want. i love the fit of a american apparel 2001, so i'm just being proactive and i will make my own shirts for the rest of TIME.
Re: Making my first custom t-shirt with cut vinyl, a vinyl cutter and a heat press
Hey Rodney I was looking at your profile and noticed you were from Sacramento, Ca. I live in Elk Grove, Ca. I was wondering if i could use my friends (Roland) vinyl printer/cutter to print my designs on transfers so i could get bigger designs. I want to try and get big designs so they can fill out the whole t-shirt. Any info would be great thanks.
Re: Making my first custom t-shirt with cut vinyl, a vinyl cutter and a heat press
Ok, I already know you guys rock! I have been reading.. I am a bit confused though and really need some honest opinions and advice.
I currently do airbrushing and soon will be getting into small time screen printing (er, my daughter will be getting into screen printing). I have a question regarding the transfer material for cutting and heat transferring to t shirts and hats. There are so many out there I don't know which to choose.
My main concerns are:
Ease in cutting ( I have a xy300p master cutter)
Ease in application and DURABILITY
Would like to do one in a material that has a very softfeel when completed and then one that is like a vinyl.
Also, did I understand correctly that you can layer some of the different materials to get a two/three color design?
What do you guys suggest?
I really appreciate it.
My shop is small and we are always struggling to make a buck.
Thank you Very much
Cher

Heatpress vinyl is easy to cut on a plotter/cutter. Application is simple, just follow the materials instructions. Durability is outstanding. Colors can be layered although more than two or three tend to become heavy and undesireable.
I use thermoflex plus but there are several other brands that work well.

Thanks for posting all this info. I have a vinyl cutter but have never explored making shirt prints with it before. I'm glad to hear the washability was good!

I'm looking at buying a Roland Stika for my very firstest cutter (whoop) and reading through this post has been exactly what I needed to confidently go with it so thanks guys for all the info. I'll post to show how I get on and probably ask a million or so questions.
