The cost of the positive ink in the production process is pennies, the cost of screwing up a printer by putting dirty ink through it is much more.
I'm not keen on CIS because it can introduce foreign objects, Epson cartridges are ridiculously well filtered to avoid any contamination. There is a good reason that Epson et al have sealed systems. |
